Variations on a theme...

Two things that annoy me:

1. When I make eye contact with, and smile at, a stranger, and in return they glare at me like I just insulted their mother and kicked their dog. Worse if it's someone I kind of know. Would it kill you to smile back? Or at least keep a passive expression?

2. People who can't be bothered to use words when communicating with cashiers and the like. Yes, it's not necessary, but it seems so nasty and condescending to just hand them your stuff and answer their questions with hand motions. Treat them like people, because they are.
