Day 3: Your first best friend.

The first best friend I have a really clear memory of is Amanda Abbott. (I think there was someone named Amy in Kindergarten, but all I can remember about her is that she was blonde and we got in trouble for talking to each other too much during class. Not enough to post about, really.)

Amanda Abbott and I were always in the same class, Kindergarten through Third Grade. This was the initial basis for our friendship, and we always sat together whenever possible. We both had dark hair and dark eyes and teachers were constantly calling me Amanda.

When Amanda tripped over a rock on the playground and broke her arm (seriously, all the crap we try to keep kids safe from, all the rules we make about not running in the hallways and not jumping off high places and always holding on to railings and handlebars, a rock is all it takes to break your arm) I took her to the nurse and brought her flowers the next day. I also helped her button her pants in the bathroom, because she couldn't do it with one hand and that's what best friends do, motherfucker.

We always used to play some old Barbie mystery date-esque board game at her house, which I loved, even though she always got to be Barbie. She had a golden retriever whose name I've forgotten, and her house was next door to another kid from our class (Devin Siva) who we used to play with sometimes.

She came to my house one night, got scared by an episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark? (my absolute FAVORITE show) and told my mother she was sick so she could go home. I didn't even think that episode was particularly scary (and trust me, there are some that were) but I understood. Some people are scared of girls getting turned into wolves, some people are scared of ET. It's cool.

When fourth grade came, we got put in different classes. Amanda got glasses and braces and we no longer looked so much alike. Our friendship ended that  year, for whatever reason, and while I was hurt then and bitter for a long time afterwards, I'm past that now. She's my Facebook friend, though I couldn't tell you the last time we spoke, and I don't mind so much anymore that she distanced herself from me in order to fit in more with the popular girls. Rutland Town School was a harsh microcosm, and we were only nine years old.

I think Amanda has a child now, and Facebook tells me she's engaged. She looks more or less the same as she did when we were younger (minus the braces) and I've felt nothing but nostalgic fondness writing this post. I'm glad she was my first best friend.

a little help from my friends - (many artists including the beatles, joe cocker, and the cast of across the universe)

I don't think I could name just one first best friend, Stephanie hung around the longest and we still chat every now and then, but I was also very close with Kandis (who is now married and has a 6 year old), Sarah who I lost track of after middle school and have never been able to find online, and Kelcey, whose older brother, coincidentally, is Jim's older sister's best friend. I met all four of these people at approximately the same time after moving to Vermont. My best pre-school friend was Kimmi, but I can't remember anything we used to do together...
