Monster High Review: Rochelle Goyle

leia131Since it's International Women's Day, I thought it would be appropriate to do a review of an international woman.
Let's start with a picture, because once you see it you will understand why I had to have a Rochelle as soon as I learned of her existence.
Rochelle Goyle, 415, daughter of the gargoyles:
Slightly concerned about people judging her.
First of all, Rochelle looks like none of the other dolls. It doesn't show up very well in the picture, but her grey skin is actually speckled to look like stone (appropriate for a gargoyle). I spent a good 15 minutes in the store examining the various Rochelle's available for just the right pattern of facial specks before I picked this one. (One had a dark spot on her upper lip that looked like a mustache... I did not pick that one.)
She also has wings, and we all know how I feel about dolls with awesome extra appendages. I wish I could take closer pictures of detailed things that didn't come out hopelessly blurry, so you could see her amazing wings... Here's an internet picture that shows them in a much better close up than I was able to get. Now let's list why Rochelle's wings are awesome:
1. They're speckled stone like her skin
2.They have 'cracks' enhancing the stone illusion
3. They're removable, in case you want to put her in clothes that close over her back, and to aid in ease of changing her outfit
4. They're easy to remove, and yet they don't fall out of her back unless you want them to
5. They were designed to work with her stand. I was worried when I first de-boxed her that she wouldn't be able to go on her stand with the wings in, but the space between them is just the right size to let the stand pole fit
6. They exist. She's a doll with wings! How many dolls with wings do you have? (I have four, and they're all Monster High. But Rochelle was the first!)
I also love her... ears? (I'm pretty sure they're ears, since she's wearing earrings in them) because they're so unique and also ADORABLE. In fact, adorable is the word I would use to describe Rochelle most often. She just looks so sweet and slightly concerned about the world. (Mostly because of the way her eyebrows are painted).
I think the pink hair adds to her innocent quality, as pink, especially that shade, is a very young color. Her hair is also very thick and soft; it's so thick that sometimes it even hides her wings. I think some Rochelle dolls have a lot more blue streaks than mine, but I like her with the blue being heavy in her bangs and much lighter in the rest of her hair
Rochelle's outfit is amazing too. Her shirt is very French looking, made to accommodate her wings, and looks distressed because it's meant to be 415 years old. Her skirt evokes stained glass, and manages to do so without being gaudy. (Also, it's shiny!) Everything about her outfit is French, but without feeling stereotypical or insulting.
And then there's the shoes... I like her shoes, as I usually like all MH shoes, and I really like how these shoes match her purse. They're also easy to get on and off, which is good because otherwise I fear I'd rip her socks.
I love the overall color scheme of this doll. I'm not always a fan of grey, but contrasted with the bright pink of her hair it works really well.

As you saw in the first picture, Rochelle's pet, Roux, is another gargoyle. I'm not sure how it works that a gargoyle has a gargoyle for a pet... Her bio says that Roux is a gargoyle griffin, so maybe that's different than a regular gargoyle? This is maybe not the most creative MH pet ever, and her name is not the best, but she sure is cute!
Breakdown time:
Favorite thing about the doll: As much as I went on and on about her wings, I'm going to go with her hair. It's just so thick and I absolutely adore the colors.
Least favorite thing about the doll: While the speckled skin definitely does make her look like she's made of stone, at times it also makes her look like she's got some horrible spotty skin disease. I picked one with good speckles, but they might not all look that great.
Favorite thing about the outfit/accessories: Her skirt. It's unlike any of the other MH skirts I have, and it's not just shiny. It's that kind of shiny where it's silver, but it's also somehow pale pink and blue and green... Like mother of pearl.
Least favorite thing about the outfit/accessories: The socks. They look all right with her overall outfit, but I'm not a huge fan. They also don't work well with many other fashion choices.
Bottom line: Rochelle is absolutely the cutest, and she has a very unique face and body. She's selling for a quite reasonable $25 on Amazon right now (probably because she's a newer doll in comparison to the others I've reviewed) and she's definitely worth that much. There's no other doll out there quite like Rochelle, and I highly recommend her! Just try to look at her in person so you can get one with ideal speckles. ;)
Answer to last Friday's song: Fuck You (or Forget You) by Cee Lo Green. I'm honestly quite surprised that no one guessed this! I thought this song was pretty popular.
