So, since it seems like there is some interest in a Face Off liveblog, I thought I would lead into it this week with a Face Off intro post. This will also include a dramatis personae, so y'all will know who I'm talking about next week. :)

Face Off is a reality competition show that airs on SyFy. Each week the contestants have to create a full head to toe makeup look that centers on a theme. (Sometimes the episodes also have a "Foundation Challenge" where the contestants have like, an hour to do a face makeup to win some prize.) The best look wins, the worst gets eliminated. The usual.

Much like Project Runway, the contestants have an extremely limited amount of time in which to accomplish their task. Unlike Project Runway, there is A LOT less drama, because the contestants on Face Off tend to help each other whenever asked, rarely cry, and there aren't any home visits or shots of the contestants tearfully calling/skyping their families. I mean, there's some drama and human interest stuff (especially near the end of the season when there are fewer contestants and therefore more down time) but mostly it's about the cool makeups.

The makeups are usually focused on the face and chest, though hands and any visible skin are also inspected by the judges. They don't have the make the costumes themselves (the cloth parts at least, they often make props and like, jet packs and things) but they do sometimes get critiqued on how the clothes they chose helped or hindered their design.

The most fun though about Face Off, because it's rooted in the movie industry, is that the contestants have to come up with a story behind their design each week. I love to hear the things they think up. :) I also like how the judges go up and poke the makeups/interact with the models wearing them.

Anyway, the hostess of Face Off is McKenzie Westmore. Apparently the Westmores are a big shot Hollywood makeup family, but I hadn't heard of them before this show. McKenzie is tall, blonde, pretty, and has a penchant for one-shouldered and/or asymmetrical dresses. Her father, Michael Westmore (who seems to have done all the makeup for Star Trek, so he's kind of a big deal) comes through the workshop with her once per episode and does his version of the Tim Gunn critique. Unlike Tim Gunn, he doesn't have a catch phrase the designers tend to listen to him. ;)

The judges on Face Off are Glenn Hetrick (I always call him Hat Trick), Ve Neill, and Neville Page. They are all movie/TV makeup industry people who no one could have named before this show, but who have all done big fancy things we've all seen. (For instance, Hat Trick worked on Buffy and Angel; Ve did Pirates of the Caribbean and Thor; Neville did Prometheus, Avatar, and X-Men 2. Oh, and Ve is doing the Hunger Games trilogy.) So, you know, it's safe to say they know their shit. Face Off also brings in guest judges, but we'll get to them when we get to them.

This entry is already three times longer than I intended it to be, and I haven't even gotten to this season's contestants yet... Well, this year is vets vs. rookies, meaning that we started off with eight new people, and eight people who had competed on previous seasons of Face Off. So far, unsurprisingly, the vets seem to be doing better. People who have been eliminated so far this season:
-Tolin (rookie)
-Sam (rookie)
-Rick (rookie)
-Eric (vet) - This one was a real shame, since he won his way back on the show... :(
-Adolfo (rookie)

Now, this is not to say that all the rookies are bad and all the vets are better. That's not true, but I do think the vets know the judges better, so they're doing better at giving them what they want. Everyone on this show is insanely talented, which is another good reason to watch. My favorites so far are Laney (the only rookie I really like, even though she apparently doesn't own real clothes), Laura, and Tate. Tate made it to the final three on his original season, and I'll be very surprised if he doesn't make it that far this time as well. The only people I really disliked were Sam and Adolfo, and they're both gone now, so it's pretty much just a festival of awesome from here on out.

And finally, outside the cut so you can all enjoy it, here are some of the winning makeups you've missed:

Alana & Miranda's Pixie

Laura, Alana, and Laney's Bride of Frankenstein

Tate and Miranda's Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater inspired pumpkin lady

Miranda's naked mole rat (much more terrifying than Rufus)

And with that, we should be all ready for next week!

Answer to last Wednesday's song: Here I Am, from Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Abby got this one right!

1. Sorry! Should I have put it under the cut? I left the pics out to try to raise interest, but that one is kinda freaky...

2. The pumpkin was from the nursery rhyme 'whimsical' challenge, so it's less creepy than the other stuff. It also has a ton of detail.

3. Maaaaybe. ;)

1. No! Absolutely not! Movie make-up is so awesome and that looks so real somehow. Hollywood should put that face in a horror movie, STAT! (I didn't realize that there was more than one season of this show. /embarrassed smiley)

2. I really love that pumpkin. I'd love to see that in a movie, too. Something Tim Burton-esque, maybe? IDK but it's really really amazing.

Yay! It actually helps me to see them make the looks every week, because I can sometimes get pretty scared of movies... It's awesome to watch it get built and critiqued and know that it's nothing to be afraid of (no matter how freaky the finished look is!)

They actually did a Burton-esque challenge one season! I should dig up pics from that, they were pretty cool.

Guh, I've been meaning to go comment on all of these entries! I've been having a weird few weeks. n_n'

The pumpkin makeup was really awesome! I'd been worried that it was going to end up being too creepy, but the tweaks and paint made it awesome!

I also really loved the pixie! <3

The mole is totally creepy! Also awesome. ehehehe I was amused by the umbrella for the Frankenstien bride! xD
