I learned something in Anthropology that has given me insight into Phantom of the Opera.

The phantom, by being deformed, "violates the scene." People who violate the "scene" or norm, are generally ignored by the rest of society, a behavior called "deviance disavowel" where people basically ignore the deviation.

So the phantom, once he escapes, instead of living a life of being disavowed, goes into hiding so he can be in control of how much people acknowlegde his existance. He is in power, not them.

Cool huh?

P.S. I am making up the analysis of the phantom, but not the terms "violating the scene" and "deviance disavowal." Those are real.
