My father was just talking to me about how the guys on the radio show he listens to on his way to work were discussing Star Wars this morning. More specifically, they were talking about how Princess Leia has a fluctuating British accent in the movies.

I would like to take this moment to say, with complete confidence, as a woman who has seen the Star Wars OT hundreds, if not thousands of times, Princess Leia Organa Skywalker Solo never had, does not have, and never will have a British accent.

Carrie Fisher is from Beverly Hills. Just because she talks like a princess would talk, which means that she annunciates and uses impeccable diction, and just because she speaks like an intelligent and refined person, does not make her speech British.

Furthermore, George Lucas has no regard for accent continuity in the OT, nor does he need to. We're talking about a galaxy he created in which the human stars come from many different planets. There is no reason for his Americans to put on fake British accents, nor for his Brits to dispose of theirs. Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness) has a British accent. Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) does not. C-3P0 (Anthony Daniels) has a British accent. Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) does not. End of discussion. (And we're not even going to go into the accents in the prequels here, because this discussion of Princess Leia need not involve them.)

Like my mom said, I am the expert. No, I don't know every single thing about Star Wars, but I do know a lot. I love the movies mainly for their dialogue, and I know most of it by heart. Therefore, I say once again, Princess Leia never had a British accent.

Thank you and Goodnight.

I don't know what you have been smoking to make you so adamant, but nobody said she had a British accent. She does, however, have a very fake-sounding British accent in a couple of her lines, the kind that seems like they were going for it at the beginning, then abandoned early on. Such as "I recognized you foul stench when I was brought on board". It doesn't mean that her accent is such that people cant tell the difference between her accent and a British person. It means people can tell she is faking a British accent.

And it doesn't require intelligence to get that either.

I'm sorry, I don't think there's anything wrong with me being adamant, whether I'm incorrect or not, on my own journal. Her accent, even on that line, still does not sound British to me.

Also, whoever you are, please don't comment anonymously.

Sigh, I love you and always agree with you...

But you're wrong.

It's known as the New Hope Curse (or at least that's what I've heard it called). Leia only has an English accent in that movie and its for a reason. In that movie she's still a senator, and george likes all of his senators to have an english accent. You can hear it strongest when she's talking to Tarkin. Also, when he threatens to blow up Alderaan you can hear her slip out of it.

The New Hope= Luke was whiney, Han shot first, and Leia was English.

She slips out of it for the rest of the movies because you never see her in a political role quite like she was meant to be in during the first movie. Instead you see her flirting with scruffy nerf herders, making out with her brother, and playing with teddy bears.

If you still disagree watch all 6 movies and note the only people with English accents. Out of the Empire it'll only be officers. Out of the rebel alliance its only Jan Dodonna and Mon Mothma (both former political heads), and you hear hard core english coming from all of the characters in the prequels because they are all supposed to be diplomatic.

Also! Anthony Daniels wasn't just chosen as Threepio for his thin frame, he was also chosen for his voice. Threepio is a robot to the stars, lol. He's programmed at an Etiquette droid for political functions...so he sounds English.

It's kinda like Firefly. America and China survived...instead its America and England.

I knew someone was going to disagree with me, (and I figured it's be you) but I still don't think it's a full out English accent.

Though your logic about English senators is infalliable, I still don't see how I could have watched that movie as many times as I have and not noticed a fluctuating English accent.

Ok, I'm going to go watch some scenes again... If you look at my reply to Jenn below, you'll see my glowing praise for you. :)

You may be right, but that still doesn't give people on the radio the right to talk smack about Star Wars.

Thanks babe!

Although, it seems I may be wrong. (See Matt's comment above.)

He's probably the only person I know who knows more about Star Wars than me.

Ok. After careful review of some key Leia scenes, I have concluded that she does put British inflections on some of her words, but I'm still not sure that that qualifies as an accent. And it still seems to me like she's just trying to sound refined, not British.

Furthermore, it's not even entire lines or even sentences that she does it on, but indicidual words.

So while I still do not agree with the radio people, I see how one could make the srgument for some fake British-ness in Leia.

As a person of curious nature I find myself compelled to ask: Does your disagreement with ANH Leia come from the fact that you really don't think she speaks that way, or that you actually find yourself relating more to the "Kickass" Leia of the other two movies, and don't want to admit that she was kind of a snob at some point?

Oh...and in conclusion, radio jocks are retarded. Even if they are right I'm sure they fucked something up elsewhere. Probably called her Princess Leeeeaaa....as opposed to the way it should be pronounced: Lay-ya.

Into the Garbage Shoot, Flyboy

Well, I think Leia is pretty kickass in all three movies.(See above quote) And I know she's a snob in ANH, but I don't think that had any influence on my analysis of her accent, unless is was subconcious, which is certainly possible.

I honestly hadn't noticed anything British about it until I was really listening for it. I'm not sure what that says about me...

In conclusion: Princess Leia: Charming, to the last.

Indeed.

Much as I love Leia, Han Solo owns my heart.

Reasons why I love Me-GONN:
1.) You post about 12 times a day, so when I finally have time to log on, I have a good, interesting amount of reading.
2.) You find Daniel Radcliffe adorable.
3.) You understand that Cho Chang is a stupid, emotional girl, and we have the HATE of the CHO.
4.) You update me on Harry Potter things, as my internet is sadly out of order most of the time.
5.) You used the words "super-special-awesome." Meethinks someone has been watching the Yugioh abridged series . . . "Screw the rules--I have money!"
6.) You are obsessive over movies. Thank baby Jesus.
7.) You are after Ron, and you understand that Harry is mine.
8.) You write like Cleolinda Jones.
9.) You have an ass that won't quit.

THE END

(EL TERMINADO)
P.S. Sunday August 12th . . . look into it. Lemme know if that would possibly work.

3. I HATE CHO CHANG AND IM NOT AFRAID TO ADMIT IRT.

5. ...Yes, I was watching Yugioh: Abridged. Cause I never saw all the episodes, so I was watching them all in order. My favorite line is where someone says "you redefine what it means to be a moron."

8. That is the highest compliment a girl can get. Yea verily.

9. I'm glad you like my ass. Yours also pleases me greatly.

P.S. I think I'm free that day!!!

Heyyy. I need to call you about Saturday, and tell you how funny it is that at the Grand Hotel they're having a "Dinner & a Movie" night, and they're showing Fight Club. Not that I'm gonna get to see it, but it was kind of funny... or appropos... or something... well, it made me think of you.

Which means we also need to set a date to watch Fight Club.
