As promised, my thoughts on Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull:

First and foremost: HE MARRIED MARION HE MARRIED MARION HE MARRIED MARION OMGOMGOMG.

Now that that's out of my system, this movie was everything one could want or expect from an Indiana Jones movie. There was humor, action, pointless chase scenes, romance, snakes, the supernatural, everything.

I made the grave mistake of looking up what other people have been saying about the movie before I wrote this, and it pissed my off good and proper. So let me just refute a point: They said the movie was predictable. OF COURSE IT WAS IT'S INDIANA JONES. They're not deep movies, people. They're based off archetypes and old serials. The good guys always win, and the bad guys always die in nasty ways. Indy kicks ass (even though he gets the shit kicked out of him along the way) and all is right in the end.

So anyways, my thoughts:

The Good:

-HE MARRIED MARION. I may have mentioned that before.

-I really liked Shia LaBeouf. I thought he did a good job, and he was funny, and I really REALLY liked how upset his "tough" character was when Ox was all crazy. It was really good.

-Marion kicks ass.

-Indy is old, and he still rocks.

-Indiana Jones values education for his children. "You are going to go back and finish school."  He is a great adventurer, but he's also a scholar. YES.

-Henry Jones the Third = WIN.

-Explaining, but not in an annoying way, how come Indy wasn't with Marion inbetween Raiders and this movie. It needed to be done, and they did it well.

-They also touched on where Marcus and Henry Jones Senior were. Which was also totally necessary.

-THEY SHOWED THE FREAKING ARK. Ever since I saw the first promo pic of that warehouse, I was like, "Is that where the ark is? Is the ark in the movie?" AND IT WAS. I freaked out and hit Andrew at that part. :)

-They kept the CGI to a minimum.

-I thought at the very very end that Mutt was going to put on the hat, and I was going to have to kill someone because they were going to make another Indy movie, only with him. BUT THEN HE DIDN'T AND IT WAS AWESOME AND I LAUGHED. I want to shake the hand of whoever was responsible for that, because we've all been thinking it, and they had to acknowledge it.

-John Hurt was amazing.

-Indy was in the war! Awwww!

-Giving advice to the kid in the library, while they were mid-motorcycle chase. Heh.

The Bad:
- That random vine swinging bit that Mutt did. WTF was that?

-I could totally hear Cate Blanchett's English accent creeping through her Ukrainian one like, every other word.

-I really wanted Shorty or someone from an earlier movie to have a cameo, not necessarily as their former character.

-They got captured and escaped about 25 times. It got a little old.

Other:

-The scene with the (not) quicksand and the snake/rope was completely pointless and there just to remind us that Indy hates snakes, and to give Marion a reason to tell Indy that Mutt is his son. And I am so ok with that. It's a sequel coming 19 years after the last movie. Steven and George know their fans. If we didn't see Indy squirming in terror of a snake at least once, we would be very disappointed. And they had to up the ante a little for her to get that information out so they could fight about it for a while. :) That fight was so much fun to watch.

-Despite Steven and George's best efforts, it came as a surprise to no one that Mutt was Indy's son with Marion. I mean, come on guys, we're not stupid. But I was ok with that too. Indiana Jones is a man who should definitely procreate.

-There is no way Indy would have been ok after being that close to an atomic bomb, lead lined fridge or no. But there's no way he would have survived most of the things he did in the other three movies either, so eh.

-I was a little skeptical at first about the plot revolving around aliens, but then they turned out to be from another dimension rather than another planet, and that's not much weirder than anything this franchise has dealt with before. Also, it all fit in with archeology vs. myth, and it reflected the changing times. That was what the 50's were about: atomic bombs and aliens. And Indy would have to have dealt with that. Also, showing him in front of the mushroom cloud? AMAZING.

-I noticed that the focus was more on everyone fighting rather than just Indy, and that was nice. This one was more of a team effort than just Indy doing it all. Which is good cause, let's face it, he is old.

-I kind of didnt like the Mac character's whole betrayal plot. It didn't seem necessary to me, but whatever.

-Despite her accent issues, I thought Cate Blanchett was wonderfully evil, and I could tell she enjoyed her part immensely.

ETA After reading Alison's post: HE SAID "I HAVE A BAD FEELING ABOUT THIS" AND I ALMOST LEAPT OUT OF MY SEAT I WAS SO EXCITED. AND NO ONE BUT ANDREW GOT IT.

Conclusion: I really liked it, it was everything I wanted and expected, and I can't wait to see it again!

I agree with everything you've said. I missed Marcus, Henry Sr. and Sala, but it was wonderful anyways.

Rock on. I bet Marcus totally would have been in it if the actor who played him was still alive.

I loved it too. I need a job now so I can afford to see it again. I hit Nate when he said the "I have a bad feeling about this" line. All in all it was great. HE MARRIED MARION! Also, do you know if the fight guy is in this one? The one who gets chopped up by a plane in Raiders?

Sadly, Pat Roach passed away in 2004.

But I'm sure, as with Marcus, if they'd been alive they'd have been in it. :)

I hit Andrew several times. I felt really bad.

See this is good, because I just read an entry from a friend who saw the movie and hated it. But you've counterpointed everything she said. I haven't seen it yet.

P.S. I'm home. Kind of busy tonight and tomorrow but starting Thursday I'm free until camp (mid-June) and we should hang out/see Indiana Jones.
