Sorry I didn't update last week's liveblog with pictures. I was super busy on Friday getting ready for Matt and Heather's visit, and it just slipped my mind. I will update this one tomorrow night though!
-And it's every designer for themselves! This doesn't really surprise me, because there can really only be one winner so we had to get to this point eventually.
-All of the designers are pleased about this development, but then Heidi throws a monkey wrench at them by saying that since every challenge this season is meant to be a team challenge, they will have sewing assistants that they have to direct, starting tomorrow GEE I WONDER WHO THOSE WILL BE? (I would know, even if they hadn't shown it in the previews last week.)
-Tim says they should use the communication and management skills they've developed over this season. Clearly he hasn't been watching the show.
-Field trip to the Hurst Building, home of Marie Claire, and Nina Garcia.
-Challenge: create a fashion forward editorial look that will run in a celebrity photo story in Marie Claire's May issue. The winning look will be worn by Jordana Brewster. Cue all the designers pretending they know who she is.
-Nina stresses that she wants no gowns, no red carpets looks, no t-shirts and pants. Their look needs to be bold in either color, print, silhouette, cut, or some other way, and they are instructed to design what's next, not what's now.
-Their relief at not being in teams is kind of depressing me, actually. Do you all hate each other that much?
-Aaaaand Michelle is back to putting down everyone else. I don't dislike her designs, but my feelings on her personality fluctuate wildly.
-I almost kind of hope Patricia wins this year, just to stick it to everyone who's been so horrible to her all season. (Even though I'm not crazy about her aesthetic, and Daniel is my sassy gay BFF.)
-Oh look, their assistants are some of the eliminated designers. I am shocked.
-LOL no one wants Richard.
-Stanley gets first pick, as last week's winner, and he picks Tu. The button bag ('wretched' as Michelle calls it), comes out to determine the rest. We have: Michelle & Amanda, Daniel & Samantha, Layana & Kate, and Patrica & Richard. Despite Patricia's pleas to a higher power, she got stuck with Richard. Neither of them is happy about this.
-Watching this is making me realize how much I miss seeing Kate and Amanda every week. I'd trade either one of them for Stanley in a heartbeat. Ditto Samantha.
-Layana is attaching bits of what I think is blue leather to each other with hand closed metal loops... I have no idea.
-Poor Patricia is having trouble trusting Richard to sew stuff for her. I wouldn't trust him either.
-Stanley is being a butthead to Tu, because he's a perfectionist and Tu is, um, not. Kate is particularly annoyed by this, because Tu is her sassy gay BFF. (No idea if Tu is actually gay or not, but he sure is 1. sassy and 2. Kate's BFF).
-At this stage, I LOVE Daniel's jacket. I don't even like yellow all that much, and yet it looks stellar.
-Stanley's fabric is hideous, just FYI.
-I, again, want Layana's hat. It's bright orange, which means I could never wear it with my pale skin tone, but damn, is she ever rocking it.
-Layana was apparently inspired by the architecture of the Hurst building. I can see that.
-Patricia, please don't let Richard drag you down. Make him work for you!
-Richard, SHUT THE FUCK UP. You are not in this competition anymore. If Patricia tells you to stand on your head and sew with your feet, YOU DO IT.
-Stanley is still a bossy butthead, Richard still can't sew, and Michelle and Amanda are still adorable.
-Why did everyone make some version of a leather jacket? Except Patricia, of course.
-Michelle is so mean, but she also makes me laugh. About Daniel's look she said, "I know Nina said there's an element of fantasy in this challenge, but he's taking it all the way to Sesame Street. He can tell you how to get there... It's through his jacket."
-Geeze, ladies, what is with all the Daniel hate? I think they're just jealous that he's my sassy gay BFF and not theirs.
-Layana is wearing her leather armor chain-link shirt in the makeup room... Why? Shouldn't that be on the model?
-I don't like Michelle's look. Not only is it hideous, it's also see-through.
-Samantha has come over to help Patricia sew at the last minute (after she was done helping Daniel, obvi). Have I mentioned that she didn't deserve to get sent home a few weeks ago. I think I did.
-Patricia is clearly not sad to leave Richard behind, and I can't say I blame her. Her outfit, however, looks pretty sloppy to me. We'll have to see it on the runway.
-Runway time! Let's see those spring/summer high fashion editorial looks.
-Wow, the guest judge is their future model, Jordana Brewster. This actually makes sense!
-Michelle's is still ugly, and still see-through. It does have a lot of movement though.
-I still like Daniel's, even though it's VERY yellow. It looks futuristic, and, as Andrew said, "that's really bold."
-Stanley's looks continue to bore me. YAWN. Also, it's an ugly kind of boring this week.
-Oh GOD, Patricia, what is that? Andrew's reaction, "What. The hell. Is that? That is just AWFUL."
-Layana's is nice, I dig the contrast of the leather and the flowy skirt. (I also like the skirt on its own. The top would be hard for normal people to wear, but it works for this challenge). Also, I'm pretty impressed with the amount of work she had to put into that top to hand punch the holes in the leather and hand close all those little metal loops.
-Andrew says Patricia's look resembles a Native American shower curtain. He's not wrong.
-Nina says Patricia's is shapeless and almost tent-like (Andrew's comment: "There's no almost about it. It's tent-like.) and that it won't look good on Jordana. She is also not wrong. Heidi, somehow, likes it. They agree that it looks unfinished and like it has technical issues.
-I still just feel so bad for Patricia.
-Stanley, I usually like pockets, but not here. Blech. Nina like his pants, and that his look has three pieces for them (the Marie Claire editors) to play with. I still don't like it.
-Heidi compliments Stanley on his good management in using Tu. I can't decide if it's racist that the only Asian guy was the one basically reduced to slave labor in clothing manufacture.
-Is weird the same thing as fashion forward?
-Daniel is demonstrating how his look is versatile, but the judges aren't sold on it. :( They wanted to see it with a skirt, and I might agree. Nina says it has potential and I think she likes the color, but they all see Easter in it, which I guess is a bad thing. I don't think it's going to get him sent home (I hope I hope) but it's not their favorite.
-They all like Layana's. It's sexy and bold and ambitious, and they feel it will photograph well, especially because it has a very interesting neckline.
-Michelle's look, as she wondered, isn't enough. And, she did exactly what Nina told her not to: made a t-shirt and pants. The judges think the work is extremely well-executed, but not right for the editorial; there's not enough fantasy in it.
-Sidebar: They're discussing right now clothing you want to wear (like Michelle's, in their opinion, not mine) vs. clothing you want to see in a magazine. This baffles the HELL out of me: isn't the point of fashion magazines to show you things you want to wear? What is the point of doing a whole photo shoot of an outfit that you don't expect people to want to wear? Why bother? Aren't you trying to sell clothes? I watch this show every week, and yet the fashion industry leaves me utterly befuddled.
-Patricia does indeed have a very unique point of view, but is that enough?
-Ugh, Stanley is the winner. It totally should have been Layana.
-Layana is in, Daniel is in, and now we're left with Patricia's Native American shower curtain tent, and Michelle's complete lack of listening skills in the bottom.
-To my surprise, Patricia is still in. Honestly, I think the judges took pity on her because she was stuck working with Richard again, and they know damn well that she can't work with him.
-I KNEW IT. They were dragging it out too much to straight up eliminate Michelle, and they did do that double elimination earlier, so we're ahead of elimination schedule. Anyway, Michelle is apparently getting a "do or die moment" with one last chance to... do something to avoid going home. They haven't said what, exactly, she has to do, and we'll have to wait until next week to see. She's an emotional WRECK (understandably) and I don't even know what's going on. They've not eliminated people before, but they're never done it like this and I am SO CONFUSED.
-Previews from next week (none of which contained Michelle, which doesn't necessarily mean she went home, they just don't want to confirm it yet, clearly) show each designer getting to go and be inspired by a different European country. I wonder of one of them will get Germany? That would be the ultimate test for a contest judged by Heidi Klum. :)
EDIT: A later ad showed Michelle in Mood, and standing with the other designers near the runway... I'm not sure what that means, exactly, as those scenes could have been shot before/during her "do or die" moment. We shall see, during next week's special, last challenge before the finale, two hour episode.
Now updated with pictures, as promised!
