Face Off Recap time!

The challenge this week was to work in self-selected teams of two (take note, Project Runway) to create a look based on a particular type of unique tree. Then, because that's not weird enough, they added a 'malady' to each tree that had to be worked into the look. The team thing worked out better than usual, because they chose their partners, and therefore there was very little drama around having to work with another person.

Top Looks

Stella and Sasha: White Birch, Burls

I didn't like this when it first came out, but it grew on me. The judges weren't thrilled with the hands (which Sasha, who isn't  the brightest crayon in the box, I'm learning) made, but the rest of the look was strong enough that they were in the top. The judges especially liked the colors, and that it was instantly recognizable as a birch tree.

I also think that they successfully integrated their malady better than most of the other people.

Doc and Jason: Bristlecone Pine, Lighting Strike

At the beginning of the challenge, Doc said that he and Jason were going to combine their terribleness (they'd both been either safe or in the bottom every time) and make something awesome. He wasn't wrong, as this look is AMAZING, and they won the challenge with it. I mean, the lightning strike aspect is kind of halfway done, but damn if the rest of it isn't great.

The judges especially liked the face:

Really, really good, and they even worked through the issues they had with their molds and the model's legs showing through. The winner was Jason, I believe because he sculpted the face.

Bottom Looks

Drew and Cig: Weeping Willow, Bug Infestation

I really hate this look, and not just because I hate bugs. Even though the main issue Drew and Cig had with it is that when they left their model she had this big branch apparatus on her back, and when she came out on stage it was gone (I guess it was too heavy?) my main issue with it is that it looks like poo.

The judges at least like the sculpt in the face, but I HATE that neon green color (why would a tree cry tears that color?) and can't see past it. Also, even though I don't like bugs, they could at least have done them well.

Vince and Damien: Sequoia, Rot

The judges chose this as the losing look for many reasons, the main one being that it made no sense to have the stump as the head, and it more or less ended up looking like a guy ran into the woods and pulled a tree trunk over his head. Andrew said, while they were making it, that it looked like a man in a tree costume rather than a living tree, and it turns out he was right.

The guys were also unable to really explain why he had one non-functioning eye, which didn't do they any favors. That detail read as tacked on and unnecessary, and the judges didn't like the black color underneath either. The loser was Vince, I think because he came up with the concept (which the judges hated).
