Argh, how do I keep getting so behind in my TV recaps? I've not even been that busy, but I do think the three straight days of grey and rain have made me disinclined to do very much.

Anyway, here's the Face Off recap I should have done two days ago.

This week's challenge was to create a beautiful fairy that was based on a natural disaster. Some of the designers were super anxious about having to do a pretty makeup rather than a scary one, but they really should have expected this to come up at some point. Not everything can be half-dead or a mutant.

The top looks were Dina, George, and Cig.

Dina, Flood:

Remember last week, when I said everyone needed to look at what Dina had made, because it was that good? I feel the same way about this one. This is FLAWLESS. I get flood, I get fairy, she's cute, it's impeccably done, and I LOVE the branches on her back that suggest wings without actually being wings.

I can't even handle how amazing the cowl is. Look at the texture in that wood! <3 <3 <3

George, Earthquake:

George thought for sure that he was going to be in the bottom, but the judges loved this. I didn't like it at first, but as I looked at it and took in all the details, I liked it more and more. She's the most obvious 'fairy' but the cracked shoulder is very well done, and model was selling it hard with her posture and movements.

I don't love the green eye makeup, but you have to admit that it's very striking. George was also worried because his face piece ripped by her mouth, but the model suggested he make that into a crack, and the judges didn't comment on it one way or the other so I'd call that a success.

Cig, Avalanche:

Cig was one of the designers who was worried about this challenge, and then he ended up winning. I think Dina should have won, but this is also quite good. The judges loved the pinks and blues he added to the white color palette, and they were especially impressed with the wings.

I will say, the colors on this are absolutely perfect. Also, the white in the eyelashes was unintentional at first, but Cig liked it and decided to roll with it, and I think it really adds something.

The bottom looks were Drew and Stella.

Drew, Oil Spill:

I think for 'oil spill' I might have gone with something more aquatic, but Drew had this idea about a 'high fashion runway piece' and ran with it. Since this isn't Project Runway, this wasn't very well received. I do like her wings that look all sad and droopy, but I'm baffled by the crystals on her head.

Drew was trying to convey the rainbow colors that you can see on the top of oil slicks, but I don't think he was successful. The judges' biggest problem with this was the giant seam of the application that rain across her face and is SUPER obvious.

Stella, Wildfire:

I think Stella's main problem was that her idea was too big. She wanted to show fire, charred forest, and then regrowth on the bottom. It's not a bad idea, but it's hard to cram all that onto one model, which I think contributed to the lack of transitions in this piece. The judges hated how the colors shifted so jarringly, and I don't think the black section conveys 'charred' as well as it could have.

Stella's other problem was that she had a really hard time getting her cowl to cooperate, and so she spent a lot of time fixing all the flame points that broke off, rather than working on the rest of the look. I like Stella, but this is not her best work, and it was all right that she went home.

My prediction for top three is Dina, Cig, and Drew. Even though Drew was on the bottom this time, in general I think he's a stronger designer and that the judges usually look on his work with more favor than George.
