I'm finding it hard for me to connect to any of the contestants this season. I still don't know any of their names, for instance.

Last week's challenge was to pick a set of one animal and one plant, and create a plant/animal hybrid creature such as one that might have been chasing down tributes in the The Hunger Games. My knowledge of THG is extremely limited, but I'm surprised that it took them this long to have a challenge based on it considering that Ve does all the makeup for those movies. In any case, the final looks were supposed to be vicious killers.

This was another team challenge.

Top Looks

Hyena & Shampoo Ginger:

God, this new picture format on SyFy sucks. There's only one shot of each look, and no close-ups, so you can't see the details. Anyway, despite the fact that I don't really know what shampoo ginger is, I thought this one was better than the one that won. This was very clearly a hyena (though you'd never know it from this picture), and I thought they integrated the plant really well.

Ram & Cactus:

This was the winning look. Even though I like this more the longer I look at it, I still think it's far more ram than cactus, and those spines are just randomly stuck on there. The judges didn't say a word about that though. And it is fairly badass, I'll give them that.

Bottom Looks

Bat & Sugarbush Protea

Seriously, where did they come up with these plants? I actually liked this one a lot, and thought they succeeded in making him very bat-like. The judges hated the colors (it was a LOT greener in person/on TV, like an acid green) and weren't thrilled with the head shape.

Thorny Dragon & Cockscomb

You know, before this episode started I said that I liked Alan, and he was the only person who's name I knew. And then he made this and got eliminated. :(  It is pretty bad, with the flat and boring paint job, and the judges HATED those blob-y jowl-y things, that were supposed to be poison sacs. Poor Alan.

This past week was the first individual challenge. The designers had to take a face card from a deck of cards, and make it into a person in the style of Tim Burton (i.e. whimsical), while somehow incorporating the suit of said card. Some of these came out really well, and some... didn't.

Top Looks

Jack of Hearts:

This is somewhat unsettling, but the judges loved it and I kind of like it. I do think it's well executed, she somehow made that heart shape work on his head, and the paint job is very subtle and much more detailed than this picture shows.

Jack of Clubs:

The judges really liked this one, with the fantastic 'club-shaped face' sculpt that I wasn't sure he was going to be able to pull off. They also loved how it conveyed sadness so effectively.

Queen of Hearts:

This was quite obviouslyt the best look, and so it won. The girl who made this was Emily (I looked up her name!) and she was playing off the shape of an actual heart, rather than the traditional heart shape. This thing is AMAZING and Glenn even said something about not knowing quite how she did it, and thus liking it even more.

Bottom Looks

King of Spades:

This was a bottom look, but you'd never know why from this picture. Seriously, SyFy, why are there not close-ups of the looks anymore? Anyway, this was awful, it looked rubbery and cartoony and the sculpted hair did not come out well at all. The overall sculpt was rough, and the paint didn't help.

King of Hearts:

There are just no words for this mess; it's one of the worst things I've ever seen on Face Off. The wig is awful, the shape of the sculpt is ugly and too plain, and then there's the paint. Dear God, the paint. What even is that? Ugh. Yet somehow, this didn't get eliminated.

Queen of Diamonds:

This one did. The concept was non-existent in this look, there's barely any sculpting, you can't see her eyes, all the details are obscured by the wig and the false eyelashes, and the paint job is boring. Plus, she doesn't even look like a queen. I think the judges hated the lacking concept more than the hideous King of Hearts above, but I'm not sure I agree. Anyway, this guy went home.

Bonus:

This is the King of Clubs, but like, nightclubs. I love this, though I agree that it's not quite good enough to have been in top looks. The boa really makes it.

I absolutely love your Face Off recaps, and I've never even seen the show. I busted out laughing at the King of Hearts one.

Aww, thank you! I was starting to wonder if anyone even read them, but I like doing them.

Hopefully I'll get more into the actual contestants here soon, and can snark on them some. :D
