Guess what? Face Off premiered this week! I had a special request to live-blog it, from the beautiful Ellen, but you're all going to have to settle for recaps because live blogging is a surprising amount of work and it's really hot in MA right now.

Remember how last season SyFy started doing only one shot of each final look, and no close ups? Yeah, well, these premiere episode photos are even worse than that (in terms of showing us the final designs) but kind of cool for another reason.

Anyway, this was the first week, so the contestants were all paired up with a person they just met and barely know, and asked to do an incredibly difficult task, the outcome of which could potentially crush someone's dreams. But they know what they signed up for (or should) because this is the 9th season of Face Off, and there's no excuse for not watching the other eight seasons.

Let's look at all eight final looks, shall we? Quantity over quality, because for a premiere episode it was pretty underwhelming and basic. The challenge was to take two models and combine them into an alien animal. The contestants were also specifically instructed NOT to take their inspiration and interpret it literally, which OF COURSE one team did and got called out for it. (Seriously though, it's been EIGHT SEASONS and this happens in every one, how do you mess this up?)

On to the pictures!

Jasmine & Ricky:

Although this doesn't show as much detail of the makeup as I'd like, it does show me who the designers are, so maybe I can learn their names before the season's almost over. This look was all right, and the judges felt the same, since it was safe. (P.S. Um, Jasmine? Why did you bother with the mesh top there? And your poor boobs do not look adequately supported.)

Scott & Nora:

You know, I didn't like this when I saw it on TV, but it looks kind of awesome here. Maybe a touch too alien and not enough animal, and I know the judges haven't liked the stomach mouth thing in past seasons, but for a first week look it's all right. Also, how adorable is Nora here? She's so proud.

Meg& Missy:

Missy was CONVINCED she was going home for this, and then it wasn't even in bottom looks. I want to like her, with her orange hair and her overcoming of anxiety issues, but she cried TWICE in the first episode, and we all know how I feel about people who cry on this and PR. Anyway, the look is fine, they were safe. Next.

Jason & Brittany:

I actually really like this one, but it's not very animal. I can't remember their concept, but the hatching look may have been intentional? Also, Jason looks like he could be Martin Freeman's brother.

Sidney & Evan:

I didn't think this was animal enough, but the judges liked it so much that they put it in top looks. I think they overlooked the obvious lack of animal in the front half because they liked the cleverness of completely hiding the second model and just using him to move the tentacles hanging out the back. (BTW, nice Good Cop, Bad Cop pose there, boys.)

Jordan & Ben:

This was the winning look. It's actually pretty cool, and I applaud these guys for making it work. When they initially had it all assembled, the front was totally open and revealing the model, so they rigged that big purple cloth to cover all the holes. Ben was the overall winner (he's the one on the right with the moustache) but I don't think he actually won anything besides bragging rights.

Kevon & Omar:

One word: Vagina. This is the team who was inspired by a clam to make... a clam. The judges hated the paint job, and I hate how much it looks like a VAGINA. The mouth thing even kind of looks like a clitoris. Needless to say, they were in bottom looks.

Libby & Stevie:

The good: The paint job, and the main head sculpt (even though I know that the judges generally don't like big bug eyes like that). The bad: The second head in the crotch area. The judges HATED that, and I'm sure it was no picnic for the model either. These two were also on the bottom.

So who went home? No one. That's right, at the end, the judges said this was just a first week test, and no one would be eliminated. PSYCH. That's really mean, guys. Hilarious, and I'm sure the contestants were all plenty relieved, but still.

I predict that Missy isn't going to last long, and I'm not sanguine about the chances of team Vagina Clam either, since they failed at following directions in week one.

See you all next week!
