Another Face Off post already? Yes, because I remembered AND I have time!

I quite liked this week's challenge, but before we get to that, we have to reveal who was eliminated from last week:

As this was the second week that the judges had HATED her paint job, they sent Missy packing. I believe I predicted that she wouldn't last long, as she cried twice in the first episode. She seemed a little bit fragile, so I hope she can bounce back from this and get stronger. (Also, there was NO REASON to put this elimination off til this week; it took about one minute to accomplish.)

Anywho, on to this week's challenge. The designers were given a focus challenge, which is either a totally new thing, or something they haven't done since the first few seasons, since I've never seen one before. What it means is that their look had to focus on just the face (rather than face, cowl, outfit, fabricated props, chest pieces, etc.) with clean edges, great detail and a fabulous paint job. The designers had to create a character from one of seven book mashups (in the vein of Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, and Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter.)

Top Looks

Stevie (Don Quixote: Monster of La Mancha)

Stevie made Don Quixote into a kick-ass dragon knight, which worked because the book cover had windmills in flames on it. The judges loved the detail on this, the application, the paint, and the concept. Basically, she succeeded at every aspect of the focus challenge.

Bless the internets, I found close-ups:

That's a lot of work right there. The judges especially liked the nose.

Jasmine (Sherlock Holmes: Bloodsucker)

Jasmine was on top again, and I really like this look. Her character, the vampire daughter of Sherlock Holmes, was scary but still beautiful, and the judges especially loved the sculpt, the colors, the beauty makeup, and framing it with that wig. Jasmine is clearly a strong contender.

And here is a closer shot:

Really nice, and also terrifying. Jasmine has great painting skills.

Scott (Don Quixote: Monster of La Mancha)

Scott's concept was that Don Quixote had created Sancho Panza, like Frankenstein's monster, out of other people. I wasn't as impressed with this concept or execution as the judges were, but the subtle detail in this is quite nice. His face is all different skin tones, the attention paid to anatomy and where the bits are sewn together really wowed the judges, and Scott was declared the winner.

Closer:

It looks so real, almost like he just painted the model's face. Which he did not. I can see why this won.

Bottom Looks

Jason (The Scarlet Letter: Puritan Poltergeist)

Jason's idea, that Pearl was the literal demon daughter of the devil, was all right, and grounded in the text of the story, but his finished look was not exactly demonic. The judges hated that it was pink, and thought the sculpt looked more like a vegetable than a demon. This is Jason's second week in a row on the bottom (he was Missy's partner last week) so he had better get his shit together.

Veggie-Pearl up close:

Sure, it's unsettling, but it's not very demonic. Also, her nose looks a lot like a wrinkly radish.

Meg (The Scarlet Letter: Puritan Poltergeist)

Poor Meg. She was on the bottom last week too, and you can tell from her face in this picture that she knows this is crap. It was meant to be Hester, killing people with knitting needles or something, but I have no idea why it's purple (I don't think it was supposed to be quite that purple originally) and it just didn't come out right at all. The sculpt is too basic for a challenge focused on the face, and she also ended up with a weird texture that she didn't want. Fortunately for her, someone else's was worse.

Close-up:

Yeah. It's just really, inexplicably, purple.

Brittany (Great Expectations of a Serial Killer)

Basically, Brittany bit off more than she had time to properly finish. She was making Miss Havisham, which is a great background concept for a serial killer, but it necessitated doing both old age and burn makeup, and she didn't succeed very well in either. It's stiff, the paint is flat, and the final look doesn't appear to be either old or burned. This is really bad, and Brittany knew it; she wasn't surprised at all to be sent home.

Close-up:

In this lovely close-up, you can see how awful this makeup is. The judges said it looked like it was carved from stucco, and they're not wrong.

Bonus: Nora (Gulliver's Travels in the Underworld)

Nora was just safe this week, but since I love both her and this look, please enjoy it. Now THIS is clearly a demon.
