Face Off - Star Trek
Sep. 2nd, 2015 03:37 pmFirst things first: If you haven't already seen this, go take the xkcd survey! It was actually a lot of fun, and my scientist heart is really looking forward to seeing the data when it's done.
Second things next: Face Off! Last night was all about Star Trek, featuring appearances by Jonathan Frakes and Michael Dorn.
This week began with a foundation challenge, wherein each designer was given a painting of an alien landscape, and directed to create an alien from said world. Mr. Westmore, having done basically ALL the Star Trek makeup EVAR, was the judge, and Evan won immunity with this look:

Which is pretty good, if a bit Avatar-esque.
The designers then had to 'evolve' their makeup into a spotlight challenge look, like the look of certain Star Trek aliens (Klingons, specifically) have evolved over the years. Michael Dorn (better known as Worf) was therefore the guest judge.
I've posted the foundation challenge looks for comparison, and the backdrops behind the spotlight looks are (conveniently) the alien landscapes.
Top Looks
Stevie, Foundation:

Spotlight:

I didn't care for this look, and even less for the outfit, but the judges liked it. To Stevie's credit, she did take Mr. Westmore's advice and changed the nose from her original sculpt, and this look had the paint job that the judges liked best. I kind of prefer the semi-mechanical look of her foundation makeup, but she wanted to make it organic, and that obviously succeeded.
Scott, Foundation:

Spotlight:

To be honest, I wasn't thrilled with this one either, but the judges liked the precision and symmetry of it. Scott is clearly a big Trek fan (he flashed the Vulcan salute at Michael Dorn) and he was just tickled to be on top this week. It was kind of nice to see someone totally geek out and refer to himself as a fanboy, despite being 43. I also don't see a ton of connection to his foundation look, besides green near the eyes, but whatever. I guess they're both somewhat aquatic?
Ben, Foundation:

Spotlight:

Ben HATED his foundation look, and was really depressed that he had to keep working with the same concept for the spotlight, but after a pep talk from Jonathan Frakes and Neville (Neville and Ve gave input during sculpting, as they've both apparently worked on Star Trek makeup during their careers) he turned it around and ended up being the winner. This is a minimal look, but it had a strong concept, great execution and detail work, and was a vast improvement over his garish and busy foundation makeup.
Bottom Looks
Jasmine, Foundation:

Spotlight:

In a rare bottom showing, Jasmine failed to translate the spikes on her first look (made out of a playing card, btw) into something better. It's kind of hard to see, but the nose and mouth on this are really sloppy and not up to par with the rest of the look. The judges did like the top of his head though, and she was safe.
Jordan, Foundation:

Spotlight:

I completely agree with what the judges said about this: 1. It's less cohesive than his foundation look, as her purple accents no longer match each other. 2. It's not different enough from his foundation look. 3. He spent all his time fabricating armor, rather than doing appliances, because they liked his fabricated armor so much last week, but you can't just do the same thing every week and expect to not get called out on it. Still, he was safe, because this actually isn't terrible.
Jason, Foundation:

Spotlight:

This is Jason's like, 12th week in the bottom, and he finally went home. His foundation look was way cooler than the spotlight one, and then the spotlight appliance didn't go well, so he had to try to cover up the problem spots with random jewels. She also just looks sad and dead in the face (and not in a good way) as you can see here:

It's not the worst look I've ever seen on Face Off, but the judges hated her weird overbite and it was time for Jason to go. Maybe he can get work as a Martin Freeman stand-in.
