Face Off - Horsemen of the Apocalypse
Sep. 25th, 2015 04:02 pmSince there are eight designers left on Face Off, this week they picked a challenge with four looks and divided the contestants in half. The four looks were the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
Top Looks
Nora, Famine

I find this deeply unsettling, so well done, Nora! The judges were especially pleased with the paint work on her chest piece, but I think it's the face that really sells this.

There's some kind of barbed wire thing going on with the mouth, indicating that he can't eat (he is Famine, after all) and it is so very very freaky. The judges also liked the colors in this, as well as the suggestion of eyebrows given with those red scratches. Honestly, I can't even look at this for too long, yikes. Clearly it was successful.
Evan, Death

Something about the colors and the patterns on this reminds me of something else, but I can't for the life of me remember what. In any case, it's also creepy as fuck, and I do think an excellent representation of Death in this context.

The anatomy, detail, and colors in this are all perfect. When Evan said he was going to do muscle under bone I was skeptical, but I do think it worked out and the inversion makes it extra creepy.
Bottom Looks
Ben, War:

This is legit one of the worst things I have ever seen on Face Off, and I literally don't know how he didn't get eliminated over it. The sculpt makes no sense, the paint is flat and boring, and he's like, the least imaginative concept (war is a soldier, what a shock) ever. The judges must like Ben or something, I don't even know.

I mean, what even is this? What was his concept? It's baffling. And it's not scary.
Kevin, Pestilence:

Now, this is by no means great, but at least it's properly painted and looks interesting! Kevon had a lot of ideas, and wasn't able to edit them down to a look that made sense, but I definitely don't think it's worse than Ben's.

I mean, I can get pestilence out of this, sure. He's got bacteria flagella in his mouth... area and clearly some kind of disease going on, I actually kind of dig it. In a way that it also scares me deeply. I don't think you deserved to go, Kevon!
