Face Off - Freak Show
Oct. 1st, 2015 05:03 pmHow they made it through this entire episode without a single reference to American Horror Story I will never know.
I was really excited for this challenge, but then they did it all weird. Instead of either picking actual medical abnormalities that lead to people being in sideshows, or making them all up, they kind of did half of one and half of the other. They also didn't even give a single line to acknowledging that freak shows were a real, exploitative thing, which annoyed me.
Anyway, the designers had to spin a wheel to be randomly assigned their 'freaks' and here's what we ended up with.

The wheel of freaks!
Top Looks
Nora, Lobster Larry:

First of all,Nora endeared herself to me by making her lobster a mobster, and I think the esthetic fits really well. The sculpt is subtle, but immediately recognizable, and the paint is superb. I also like the hand wraps leading to his claws, because they both camouflage the edge there, and contribute to the mobster look.

I'm so impressed with the paint on this. That kind of speckling is hard! And there's no question what he's supposed to be.
Ben, Human Peacock:

The judges must really love Ben or something, because I thought this was TERRIBLE, and yet he won. He doesn't deserve to be here after last week anyway, and then Hattrick said, "there was really only one top look," so screw Nora I guess. Why would you say that? In any case, this won, for some reason, even though it's not very birdlike and I hate what he did with the lip. The paint is good, I guess, since it's hard to get a natural-looking flesh tone.

Like, what the fuck even is this? It's lumpy and badly applied in the forehead area and I don't understand why it won.
Bottom Looks
Evan, Moon Girl:

I don't know what Moon Girl was supposed to be, but this is terrible. He wanted her to have some kind of skin condition leading to the moon thing (inspired by crater face, maybe?) but then he gave her the big misshapen head for some reason... and why is she a hillbilly? It makes no damn sense, and you can tell by Evan's face that he knows it.

Where are those pigtails even coming from?
Meg, Inside-Out Oscar:

Poor, poor Meg. She struggled with this, as she has struggled so many times this season, and this was the last straw. Oscar is not so much inside out here as just missing his skin, and even that was not done very well. She topped it off, literally, with some kind of weird hat made out of his skull (I think?) attached with a lot of goo, probably because she hadn't had time to finish off his head the way she wanted... It was a huge mess, literally and metaphorically, and definitely the worst look.

Attaching his weird hat thing. Maybe it's made out of his skin?

The face is also really simian, unintentionally, and look at that mess on his skull. Farewell Meg, I will miss your awesome hair and sunny attitude.
