Face Off - The Expanse
Oct. 8th, 2015 03:37 pmThis week's challenge had something to do with a SyFy show called The Expanse that debuts in December, but that's not super relevant.
The bottom line was they had to make humans who had evolved to cope with some kind of world-ending disaster scenario.
Top Looks
Jordan, Ice Age:

When Jordan was sketching this, his concept was basically, "fat guy in furs" and I was unimpressed. However, it evolved in something a bit more sophisticated along the way, with 'vents' to take in heat and folds of skin to store said heat, and it was executed beautifully. I have no strong feelings on Jordan as a designer, but he sure is adorable as a human, and I'd be ok with him in the top three.

This is incredibly done, especially the hair work, which the judges did compliment him on.
Evan, Severe Drought:

The judges really loved this for some reason. Ve was particularly excited about the color palette, but I don't dig it. He too has some kind of face 'vents', this time for gathering moisture, and a nose... apparatus to store it, but I for one don't know why it's purple and wouldn't know what environment he was supposed to be suited for if he wasn't dressed like Lawrence of Arabia. In any case, the judges liked it a lot, and Evan was the winner.

I guess I just don't get it. Does this say severe drought to anyone?
Bottom Looks
Ben, Volcanic Disaster:

Ben's idea was that humans in this post-volcanic world have become coated in ash, and use it as armor, or something, but he basically just made a girl with shiny mud on her face and the judges were unimpressed. They also didn't understand why she still had hair, given that volcanos are HOT. Yet, somehow, again, Ben was safe.

The judges (rightly) said that this doesn't look like an evolution as much as a human who's used ash as armor, so I don't know why he wasn't eliminated simply for failing the basics of the challenge.
Stevie, Polar Melting:

Let's be frank, I don't think this was either the worst thing Stevie's ever done, nor the worst look this week, and I would have Tim Gunn saved her if I had the opportunity. The judges didn't like the colors, or the way she seemingly neglected the gills on the nose.

I think this is fine, and I actually really like the forehead. Alas. The judges are right that it was applied crookedly, however.
With Stevie gone, Nora is the only remaining woman, and they announced that two designers will be eliminated next week and the final three will go on to the finale. I hope Nora can make it through!
