This post is much, much later than usual, but I was busy dodging bats and learning complicated card games and doing actual work at work...

Challenge: Choose a weird-looking ancient artifact, listen to a language created by a language expert who creates made-up languages for movies and TV shows, and then design a member of the ancient civilization that once spoke that language and had that artifact. The artifacts were kind of not important, beyond being a way to randomly assign the languages, and the language expert/creator was the guest judge, so this was really all about the languages.

Top Looks

Mel & Kaleb:

Their language had lots of hissing in it, so they went with snake. I quite like this, because it evokes snake without being just a giant snake. The language expert said this character wouldn't be able to make the sounds he assigned to this team's artifact with those fangs, but whatever. The judges liked the mouth, and the totally black, deep set eyes. I think Mel is shaping up to be one of my favorites.

Anna & Yvonne:

Yvonne's first time on the top, yay! She was appropriately excited about this fact, and this look was the clear winner, with that elaborate headdress, a very cohesive character that the language expert thought went with the language quite well, and a perfect paint job. Yvonne was the overall winner, because she made that great headpiece/cowl.

Bottom Looks

Robert & Johnny:

You can tell by their faces that they know this is shit. Their language had clicks in it, so they went with a creature with a beak (and picked squid instead of bird, for some reason) but this is much too literal. They also spent so much time on the giant cowl that they didn't have time for much else, especially painting it properly. The judges hated the paint job and the pink color, and weren't thrilled with the look overall. Also, the language guy said the beak wasn't right for the language, but at least they didn't get eliminated.

Ant & Njoroge

I think this was supposed to be a lizard? Or a frog? Something. Their idea was that the creatures couldn't hear very well, so they had evolved big ears and eyes to compensate, but they 1. made those big plastic bug-eye things that the judges HATE and 2. painted this basically flat green, which did not go over well. Ant was eliminated, but I can't remember exactly why. Probably because he painted it.
