Monster High Review: Clawdeen Wolf

I'm watching HalloweenTown while I write this, so
Meet Clawdeen Wolf, 15, daughter of the werewolf:

She is sassy like nobody's business. Please ignore the weird way the picture came out...
To make a long story short, Clawdeen is the reason I have more than one Monster High doll. When I used to go to Target at every opportunity and drool over the dolls in the MH case, she was the one that stood out the most. I think this is probably because she's the most obviously not human of the original class. Yes, Lagoona has fins, and they're all weird colors, but Clawdeen has ears on the top of her head! And fangs! Also, she is fierce. She was the doll that drew me to the MH display, and she (and Frankie, but that's the next review) just had to come home with me.
Clawdeen is one of a big family, and Mattel has also made two of her siblings into dolls (so far). She's the fashionista of the bunch, and takes crap from no one, especially Cleo. (Fun dork fact: I once promised Clawdeen I wouldn't buy basic Cleo, and so far have honored that promise.) Clawdeen's bio and diary also make a point of saying how fast her hair grows, which gives her doll great potential, as Mattel changes the color and length of her hair with every doll, instead of just the style. This is possibly why I own more Clawdeens (Six. Six? I really own six Clawdeens? *counts* Basic, Dawn of the Dance, Ghouls Rule, Scary Tales, Coffin Bean, and Sister Pack. Yup. Six.) than any other doll.
Clawdeen's pet is a cat named Crescent, and I think it's interesting that the wolf character has a cat for a pet, and not a dog. Maybe she gets enough dog stuff from her family?
Of course, my Clawdeen is special:

No, Crescent, no!
I don't think I mentioned this is my last post, but Monster High dolls have arms that are designed to come apart at the elbows and hands, to make dressing them easier. I had my Clawdeen for about two days before the pin in her elbow snapped off and was lost forever, giving her that attractive one-armed look so popular with pirates. It cramps her style, since she can only wear long sleeves, but only a little. (You can't even tell that it's broken in that first picture, can you?) But if I glued it back on she would lose a lot of flexibility, so I've left it be. (This is also the doll that resulted in the awesome service from Mattel I discussed in this post.)
Arm breakage (and some other minor things I've broken) is what makes me worry about kids playing with these dolls. I'm in my mid-20's, and I've broken their arms, shoes, necklaces, and stands. I can't imagine what kind of destruction 12 year old me would have wrought. (Of course, I'm the girl who accidentally melted the hand off Hollywood Hair Barbie, so maybe I'm not the best example.) In any case, I think the recommended age of "six and up" is being awfully generous. But every kid is different, and Mattel seems to be making bank on parents buying these for their kids, so maybe I'm just too rough with my toys.
In any case, here's the breakdown:
Theme: Honestly, the MH themes aren't terribly subtle (as you may have noticed with Lagoona's being 'water/fish'), and Clawdeen's is: 'animal'. Well, that and 'fasteners' (buckles, zippers, etc.). Her signature color is purple, and though I hesitate to call that a theme, it is the most recurring thing about her.
Evidenced in: Her furry coat and tiger-striped shirt (animal), boots and purse (buckles/zippers) and EVERYWHERE (purple). Seriously, the only non-purple things are her socks, shirt, and belt. Even her cat is purple!
Favorite thing about the doll: Her ears! I love the clearly non-human look they give her, I love that they're pierced, and I love that they kind of remind me of Inuyasha.
Least favorite thing about the doll: Besides her broken arm? Ok. So. There's this problem that MH dolls made in Indonesia tend to have, where their heads are filled with glue (to help keep their hair in? I think?) and then it seeps out where the hair is rooted and makes the hair greasy/sticky. Well, I didn't know about this problem until I joined the MH Livejournal community, or I would have tried not to buy Indonesia made dolls. But I only joined that community a few months ago, and so I have a couple of greasy-haired dolls, and Clawdeen is definitely the worst. Her hair is just gross, and has been since the moment I de-boxed her.
Favorite thing about the outfit/accessories: Probably a tie between her furry coat (I wish i had a coat like that, and the attitude to pull it off) and her shoes. I don't know if they're sandals or boots, but I do know that they're awesome. I didn't take a picture of the buckles up the sides (because I'm dumb, apparently) but the internet never fails!
Least favorite thing about the outfit/accessories: I'm not a big fan of orange, and so I'm not crazy about Clawdeen's shirt. Back when I had only a few clothes to work with, it also clashed with everything and was a huge pain in the ass.
Bottom line: Clawdeen is amazing, and there are so many of her to choose from, all with wildly different hairstyles, that everyone should own at least one. ;)

Pick me! Even with one arm, I am stunning!
Heh, I'm at the part of Halloweentown where they get hair from thetotally straight, why do you ask werewolf hairdresser. I love this movie. I bet Marnie would fit right in with the MH kids.

Date: 2012-10-09 04:12 pm (UTC)I never heard of the greasy hair thing until reading on the LJ comm, too, but I've only encountered issues with it once...and that was with a nude Frankie I bought from someone to wear one of the extra outfits from the I ♥ Fashion Frankie set.
(I unexpectedly found one of the rereleased Wave 2/School's Out Lagoona's hidden behind a bunch of Ghouls Rule dolls @ a Meijer store. Snapped her up while making a noise that probably only dogs could hear lol.)

Date: 2012-10-09 04:51 pm (UTC)As for the greasy hair, I can't really notice it in any of my dolls unless I'm looking for it, except this Clawdeen. I knew the first moment I touched her that her hair was... weird, but I thought it was just whatever gel/mousse they boxed her with. It's definitely gotten stickier over time, however.
I'll probably mention this in my Toralei review, but when I turned the corner in TRU and saw her on the shelf, I yelled, 'YES!' very loudly while lunging for her box. The three other people in the aisle looked at me like I was a little unhinged, but I don't care. To this day that is the only Toralei I've ever seen on a shelf.

Date: 2012-10-09 05:07 pm (UTC)I soaked my greasy Frankie’s hair in almost-boiling water that had Dawn dish detergent in it on a whim (since “Dawn gets grease out of the way” or whatever their slogan is lol) and it worked pretty well (though I did have to do it twice).
I don’t blame you at all!!! I have a feeling I’ll do the same when Jinafire is released. I used to see Toralei ALL THE TIME on shelves when I started collecting the dolls & I always passed her up thinking I could get her later since there was always tons of her. And of course, when I finally decided it was time to buy her, I couldn’t find her anywhere & ended ordering her online. LESSON LEARNED, now I grab any doll I think I want…I figure if I change my mind, I can always sell her/him online.

OMG JINAFIRE YUS. Ahem. Anyway, I have found over the years, not just with dolls, that I always regret not buying things more than I regret buying them, so I usually go for it when in doubt. In conclusion, JINAFIRE.
