I realized when I was talking about the Heath and Abbey two pack a little bit ago that I haven't actually done a review of Abbey, so I thought maybe I should do that before we get to the two pack.

Now, there is a basic Abbey release, that came with her pet and diary and everything. I do not have this doll, mostly because she came out during the time when I was trying to cut down a little on which dolls I bought due to financial instability, and she just did not do it for me. In retrospect, I totally could have cut that fur ruff ( he biggest negative for me) off her head and been fine, but whatever. Bottom line: I don't own Basic Abbey.

But I do own four other Abbeys (Abbies?), so let's take a look at the first one.

Abbey Bominable, 16, daughter of the Yeti. BTW, she totally has one of the best MH names.

Abbey is an exchange student to Monster High, and definitely one of my favorite characters. She's from The Himalayas, I think, and her accent, sense of humor, and lack of understanding of American Monster customs is a never-ending source of amusement for me. Had I seen the webisodes earlier in my life, I probably would have bought Abbey much sooner. I also love how all the dialogue on her boxes (and her profile that I linked above) is written in her own peculiar way of speaking, which means her diary (that I don't have) is probably hilarious also. On top of that, Abbey is one of the few monsters shown to have actual awesome powers, namely the power to freeze people. I love that, and would definitely want her on my side in a fight. (She actually reminds me a bit of Starfire from Teen Titans, and that's definitely not a bad thing.)

The first Abbey I ever bought (and the one pictured here) is Skull Shores Abbey, and I'm not the least bit ashamed to say that what sold me on this doll was the hat. There aren't enough dolls with killer hats, IMHO, and even fewer MH dolls with hats that actually fit on their giant heads. Not that I don't like Draculaura's collection of tiny hats (which has now spread to Spectra), because I do, but it's nice to also have a hat that is normal sized.

Abbey is also a fantastic example of the care and detail that Mattel puts into these dolls. Not only is her head sculpt different than all the other monsters (something I love about MH in general) but her jaw sticks out in a very un-traditionally feminine way. She also has different fang paint than Draculaura or Clawdeen, and slightly bigger hands with little claws on them. Because she's a yeti.

Abbey's hair is mostly white, with purple, blue, and pink streaks. The streak locations and alignment vary from Abbey to Abbey, with the most striking one so far being the candy-esque stripes on Home Ick Abbey. Her hair is also usually full of shiny white tinsel, probably to indicate frost or snow. Skull Shores Abbey's hair comes in a low side ponytail (so she can wear her hat at a variety of angles) but this can be easily altered. Too may MH dolls have hair that you can't really mess with, for one reason or another, but not this Abbey. You can play with her hair to your heart's content, and then get it back into its original ponytail, no problem.

And finally, possibly to emulate in doll form the snowflakes that follow her everywhere in the webisodes, Abbey's entire body is covered in glitter, giving her an all-over shimmery appearance. None of the other MH girls have this, and (thankfully) Mattel has either mixed this glitter in with her plastic, or sealed it extremely well, because it doesn't come off on your hands when you play with her. The only downside to the glitter (because who doesn't love glitter?) is that it makes Abbey's skin rough, which hinders her ability to easily wear some of the tighter MH fashions. (But we'll go into that in more detail when we get to I <3 Fashion Abbey.)

As for this outfit, Skull Shores Abbey is a budget doll. This means she's wearing minimal clothes, which In this case is a bathing suit. It is, however, exactly the bathing suit you'd expect a yeti to wear, covered in snowflakes and with accessories that look like they're fashioned from ice. I can just imagine Abbey whipping that hat up out of ice to keep her head cool. There are a variety of sassy ways that Abbey can wear this hat, and I lurve it. The color scheme of her outfit isn't my favorite, but the shoes are great and match a lot of other stuff. They're easy to get on and off, also look like ice, and would be cute in real life as well.

I sure wish y'all could see the glitter in her skin better, but my camera didn't pick it up well. In any case, I don't have a whole lot more to say about this doll, so let's get to the rundown!

Theme: Appropriately enough, Abbey's theme is ice and snow. Her looks also tend to feature fur.
Evidenced in: Her hat, shoes, and earrings are all meant to look like they're made of ice (the earrings especially are little blue icicles), her bathing suit and skirt have a snowflake pattern, and you may notice that the top of the skirt is lined in fur.
Favorite thing about the doll: Seeing as this was my first Abbey, I was totally charmed by both her glittery skin and hair. So, glitter.
Least favorite thing about the doll: What is there not to love about her? I guess it might be that she looks a little plain without the hat.
Favorite thing about the outfit/accessories: Do you even have to ask? The hat!
Least favorite thing about the outfit/accessories: I think her little overskirt is kind of awkward and ugly. I'm not a huge fan of the see through fabrics Mattel always seems to use with her.

Bottom line: As far as an introduction to Abbey, this doll is not bad. The ice theme is present but not overwhelming, and the minimal outfit shows off her glittery skin wonderfully. Also, I seriously think she's the only MH doll thus far that's come with a non-mini hat (not counting the Roller Maze helmets). It's certainly the only correctly sized MH hat I own. :) Her simple hair style and versatile accessories definitely make her worth the money, especially since she's a budget doll and even now, years after I first bought her, she's only going for $18.50 on Amazon.

Song quote for tonight: And she's got a way of makin' a boy act like a clown!

Answer to last Thursday's song: Worried Man Blues, my version is by The Kingston Trio. No one guessed this.
