Time for some Golden Globes red carpet fashion opinions! Not going to comment on every dress, because we all have lives.
Amy Adams... I don't know how I feel about her dress or her hair. I'm not loving the red and red/orange combo (it would definitely be better if it was all one color) and something about her hair bothers me though I couldn't tell you exactly what. She said it was influenced by her American Hustle role, and I can totally see that.
Lena Dunham (I almost know who she is) should definitely not be wearing that shade of yellow. I'm not sure anyone should wear that shade of yellow, but definitely not her. The dress also looks like it's too tight.
Taylor Schilling, who apparently is on Orange is the New Black looks like she's wearing a green nightgown. In fact, I think my mom had that nightgown, but in pink.
Oh Kaley, honey, no. It looks like someone spilled water on her dress and all the colors ran together. The shape of it isn't great on her, and sister never knows what to do with her hair. :(
Zooey Deschanel made her top out of an ugly sweater and looks pretty uncomfortable in it, like she can't put her arms all the way down cause it's itchy. And the cut of the bottom is not making me like it any better. Her hair, however, I like.
Sandra Bullock has the first dress I even kind of like, but I can't see the bottom of it so I'm cautious. I like pink and black together, but I don't think everyone does. Also, the top either has an unfortunate seam, or it's colder out there than she anticipated. Upon seeing the bottom, I wish that that blue part was about half the width, or was absent altogether. I still like the top though.
JAMES SPADER. Nothing to say about his outfit but I love him and I had to interrupt this to mention that JAMES SPADER.
Jennifer Lawrence really likes white gowns that are poofy on the bottom, doesn't she? I love her short hair, but this dress looks like she had to strap it on to keep it up and I don't like it. It would be 1000% better without that second black strap, and the red lipstick is an odd choice with the pale color palette. ETA: Andrew said it looks like a napkin with napkin rings on it. He's not wrong. Also, this.
Sofia Vergara, who I have never seen act in anything ever, sure knows how to dress. This is the best dress I've seen so far, and the necklace is perfect with it.
Kerry Washington is quite pregnant during awards season, which means she had to decide whether to hide it or show it off, and she's like, somewhere in the middle. I'm not crazy about how the coat part on top flares out to make her look even bigger than she is, it would be better if it cut off higher up, but it looks ok overall.
Reese Witherspoon has on the best color dress so far, and it's so beautiful in its simplicity that I want to cry.
Helen Mirren continues to be beautiful and amazing. That is all.
Julianna Margulies' dress is beautiful on top, but I can't see the bottom. If that fucker is like, a mermaid or some shit, UGH. Oh, no, it's pretty on the bottom too, and the detail is nice down there! And it looks like it has pockets! Woo!
Taylor Swift's dress would be pretty if it weren't for that black part on top. Also, she's like the third or fourth woman (Lena, Kaley) wearing one of those really structured tops, which I don't like and which make everyone's boobs look small and uncomfortable.
Her Cateness is here! Not sure I would like that dress on anyone else, but Cate is tall and graceful enough to pull it off. And has a long enough neck. The collar seems like it would be irritating, but I LOVE the sleeves, and thank God the bottom isn't see-through in the way I initially thought.
Drew Barrymore is also pregnant, but that's no excuse for the butterflies? flower petals? all over that dress. No excuse at all. ETA: I keep seeing this outfit on "Best Dressed" lists. Am I crazy to hate this, or does everyone just want to be nice to her because she's pregnant?
Julia Roberts is wearing a button-up shirt under her nice black dress, WTF? She looks like a movie star from the boobs down, and a semi-sexy secretary from the boobs up. I do like her hair, but in combination with the shirt it's very businesslike.
Someone should tell Emma Thompson that she's not 80 years old and doesn't have to dress like she is. You're still young, Emma! ETA: YIKES to whoever that is standing next to her in purple. Yikes.
And that same someone should tell Tina Fey that she's not 21, and doesn't have to dress like she is. Amy Poehler looks AMAZING, however. I hope they get lots of good costume changes tonight. ETA: Tina's first hosting dress is a million times better than her red carpet one. I WANT IT.
Heidi Klum's bangs make her look very young, and she somehow still has the body and cleavage to support that illusion. The dress is pretty overall, but I could do without the lace detail on the top that moves it a little toward nightie territory.
Jessica Chastain, yes. Yes to everything about that dress, and the hair works with it even if it's not to my taste.
Melissa McCarthy has very bad luck with dresses, which I blame the fashion industry for, 100%, but at least this one is just simple black and silver and not some weird mash of colors. I really don't like the swept-back bangs, why does everyone have those tonight?
Who the hell is Paula Patton, and what the hell is on her shoulder?
Chris Pine is welcome on my TV screen in his suit at any time. Though I would like it if he shaved.
HOT DAMN, OLIVIA WILDE. I'm really impressed that you can wear a dress that slinky and sparkly and look that fabulous. ETA: Apparently she is also pregnant, which makes how hard she's rocking this look even more impressive.
The zipper on Kate Beckinsale's dress broke, but I'm glad that they got it fixed because I love a good sparkly dress. Her face though... Botox? She looks off somehow.
Michael J. Fox is adorable and amazing. "Longevity is something you have to work at for a long time." LOL
H'ok, I guess that's all the fashion we're getting for tonight. I don't have the energy to liveblog this whole show, but I encourage you to watch it, because everyone (Meryl) is there to get their drink on. Also, I'll try to get some pictures up here for you all later. :D
ETA: Now with pictures!

Date: 2014-01-13 04:42 pm (UTC)I have to crack-up at the media sites who've put together lists of the "best dressed men" when 98% of the men are wearing THE EXACT SAME BASIC TUX.
Okay, so they go by looks/popularity, I know I know...Jonah Hill & George Clooney could wear the EXACT SAME THING and one would make "best dressed" and one would make "worst".no subject
Date: 2014-01-14 04:41 pm (UTC)I love red, but maybe the lack of different colors is why I love Reese Witherspoon's dress so much?

Date: 2014-01-13 09:46 pm (UTC)My two cents:
Amy Adams: totally see the American Hustle inspiration, wish it had carried to her hair though. Would have been better to wear it a little wilder/less tight and structured.
Lena Dunham: Makeup is perfect, color is nice on her, wish she had stepped up the jewelry a bit. The structure is never a good call (unless maybe you're 18 and its a cocktail dress). Clearly the fabric wasn't made to be sat in in a limo for hours though, girl needs a steamer.
Taylor Shcilling: Why?
Kaley Cuoco: I like the dress. A Lot. She's actually pulling off the bustier top and if it weren't for her sad hair she'd be on my best dressed list.
Zooey Deschanel: Why? (And super matchy-matchy shoes and top, not sure how to feel about that.)
Sandra Bullock: You think Tina Fey needs to stop dressing like she's in her twenties? This dress in totally not age appropriate unfortunately. And her toes look weird in her shoes.
Jeniffer Lawrence: I totally understand why the meme exists. Side note: Yay! So happy she's back together with Nick Hoult. Other side note: Love Colton Haynes :) Did you ever watch Teen Wolf on MTV? if not you should.
Sofia Vergara: That is quite a dress. Also, I think the necklace hue isn't quite right for her skin tone (it's a cool blue whereas she's very warm, and there are ways to make turquoise look warmer).
Kerry Washington: Embrace your baby bump! Wear something tight and not that awful excuse for a dress. It's atrocious and doesn't do anything for you.
Reese Witherspoon: Looks like she's going to a beach house party not the Golden Globes. Could've made it work better by amping up the jewelry (really, just studs and a bracelet), maybe an updo, hemming it a couple inches since it is too long, and I would've added a 2.5-3" lace band in the same color as the dress around the waist seam to hide it (it makes it look like it's made out of jersey, adding to the casual feel).
Helen Mirren: The first entry 100% deserving of being put on the best dressed list.
Julianna Margulies: Very pretty and styled well (note the perfect hem length).
Taylor Swift: needs a necklace and a hem. Otherwise I like it. However, for literally being built like a model, this dress makes her look short.
Cate Blanchett: Looks lovely, and I'm surprised she didn't have to fight Nicole Kidman away from that dress with a stick.
Drew Barrymore: She's Hollywood royalty and pregnant. I'd say the media is being nice. Tat said, it is styled perfectly with the makeup, studs, clutch and shoes. Don't liek the hair though :/
Julia Roberts: I wish she hadn't worn the button down shirt with it even though it kinda works. I think it afforded her the opportunity to skip spanx and be more comfortable though.
Emma Thompson: That dress highlights her worst areas and downplays her best :(
The hosts: agree with what you said. I think Tina's red carpet look would have been less teeny-bopper in a different print or solid color.
Heidi Klum: A little too "Interview with a Vampire" for me. It's not 1993 anymore.
Jessica Chastain really knows what she's doing on a red carpet. Except for that hair. Yikes!
Melissa McCarthy needs to fire her stylist and find someone who deosn't just try to cover her up. I recommend any of Queen Latifah's past or present stylists (though i recognize they are quite different in size, both actresses are considered full-figured).
Paula Patton is Robin Thicke's stunning wife and an actress. I love the statement she's making but with the dress were sleeveless.
Chris Pine can really wear a suit. The tailoring is absolutely impeccable. I wouldn't mind seeing him in another suit though if you get my drift...
Olivia Wilde: Another best dressed contender. She's having a real Angelina Jolie moment here, and I'm loving it. (But again it is just a little too long.)
Kate Beckinsale won the Red Carpet this year though. By far the best. I just hope she has something as awesome for the Oscars.

Date: 2014-01-13 10:09 pm (UTC)Just a few comments, since I definitely just went with gut reactions.
-I was watching NBC's red carpet, which I regret because they were terrible at showing dresses in full length... Which is why I thought I liked Sandra Bullock's when I really didn't.
-A lot of people agree with you about Reese's dress being too casual, but I still like it. Maybe I just like her. :D
-You are totally right about Emma Thompson with, "That dress highlights her worst areas and downplays her best." She's so amazing, and was hilarious last night, I just wish the dress were better.
-Melissa McCarthy really does need a new stylist. I think that every time I see her on a red carpet. Oy.
-Is Kate nominated for something? Or presenting? I can't remember.
