Just watched Alien for the first time (as part of our New Year's resolution).

On the one hand, this was a good movie. I was invested in the characters, it was tense, I jumped a couple of times, my heart rate went up, it was beautifully shot, and I love the fact that the alien was played by a man in a suit rather than a puppet or a computer. On the other hand, WHY IS EVERYONE IN THE MOVIE SO STUPID?

Like, I understand why no one listened to Ripley and they all brought infected!John Hurt inside. That was only dumb because I knew they were in an alien movie, and they didn't. And all of Ash's weirdness and bad decisions eventually made sense (which is a twist that seems kind of overdone nowadays, but was probably a big deal in 1979. And I actually didn't see it coming.) What I want to know is:

-Why did they keep going off in ones and twos, when every time they did that someone died? Just stay put, the damn thing isn't actually coming after you.

-Why did no one realize that the alien was either above or below Dallas if it was 'on him' but he couldn't see it?

-Why didn't they all just hang out in suits in/near the airlock, and then if the stupid thing came to them they could open the air lock and boot it out, but be safe themselves? (This is what Ripley did eventually, I just wish it hadn't taken her so long to figure that out).

-Why, with all this advanced technology, did they not have some kind of emergency 'call for help' they could send out, and/or a shuttle BIG ENOUGH FOR ALL SEVEN CREWMEMBERS? Did humanity learn nothing from the Titanic?

-Most importantly, why did the short haired chick JUST FUCKING STAND THERE AND LET THE ALIEN KILL HER? Especially after Parker heroically charged at it to save her? This was hands down the stupidest thing anyone did the whole movie.

To end on a high note, I really liked Ripley, even though she had her share of stupid moments (like when she went off alone after the cat, OY) and I kind of want to watch Aliens just to see her kick more ass. Plus, there were no crappy gender roles in this movie. :D

The Grammy's are tonight, and I'm already watching the red carpet, so be prepared for some Grammy fashion reactions in the days to come.

The short-haired woman is Jack McFarland's mother in that one Thanksgiving episode!

I know! I looked up the whole cast, because she look suuuper familiar, and I knew I knew the name Ian Holm, but couldn't remember why, and I was like, "OMFG it's Jack's mother!"

I wanted her to make it because of her Will & Grace connection, but alas she was too fucking stupid.
