And now, in the same vein as what I did for the Grammys (but hopefully without the satellite interruption) some of my thoughts (as I had them) on the Oscars red carpet and ceremony.
ETA: I wrote this last night, but I'm not posting it until today because 1. I wanted to add pictures and 2. It badly needed editing, but the Oscars went SO LONG last night that I went to bed instead of doing that. So, here we are.
-Let me start by saying that, as usual, I've only seen three or four of the movies nominated (in any category) and I've never even heard of some of them. (In my defense, Two Days, One Night seems to not be in English, nor to have had a wide release.)
-How is The Lego Movie not nominated for Best Animated Picture?
-OH MY GOD, E! people, please stop reading the definiton of 'flogger' on the red carpet. NO, REALLY, PLEASE STOP.
-Lupita is just wearing pearls, from head to toe:

I love it (and her), but it must weigh about 1000 pounds.
-Her Cateness is rocking that necklace, and wearing something simple for once:

You go Cate! I'm probably going to go see Cinderella just for her.
-Zoe Saldana is also wearing something normal and pretty for a change:

I love the color, and on her, and possibly her alone, that hip-enlarging design works really well.
-Rosamund Pike has the tiniest waist EVER, and that dress is highlighting it in all the right ways:

I like the dress overall, though it's not my favorite. And holy crap, she just had a baby December 2nd. And her waist is that tiny. Ugh.
-Why does everyone have that swept back hair thing again this year?
-I like Felicity Jones' dress, but I wish it was a different color:

It looks dingy, like it used to be white and then she washed it with a black dress and ended up that color. I'm loving the neck part, however:

Look at that detail!
-I really dislike Giuliana's dress, apropos of nothing:

Although it looks a lot better in this picture. It's the mesh top that bugs me, I think.
-I don't like Margot Robbie's dress, but everyone else does. And I don't like the necklace either:

And yet, overall the look somehow works? I don't even know anymore. Maybe I've just heard everyone praise it for so long that I kind of like it now?
-Something about Dakota Johnson's dress is off-putting to me:

I think it's the uneven neckline... And I'm not crazy about that big knot on her shoulder either. (P.S. I just found out that her parents are Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson.)
-I quite like Behati Prinsloo's (Adam's Levine's wife's) dress, even though she's married to my music boyfriend:

But I really hate her hair, possibly even more than the swept back look. It makes her ears look MASSIVE.
-Reese Witherspoon has my favorite dress thus far. Unfh. I do wish her hair was different though.

-Oooh, Reese might have to defend her 'Megan's favorite dress' title from Scarlett Johansson:

Hot DAMN she looks fantastic, and her hair is fabulous. Green is a GREAT color on her, and she's also rocking the big necklace. (Big necklaces must be the ~thing~ this year, yes?)
-Hmm, Emma Stone, I don't know how I feel about that dress. I want to like it, but the color makes me sad. It's like part tree branch pattern, part animal print, and part topographic map:

Also, she's at least the third person who brought their mother as their date. I'm declaring that also a ~thing~ this year. (P.S. Lupita brought her brother again. Adorable.)
-I thought I liked Naomi Watts' dress, but the more I look at it the less I like it:

It's shaped too much like an apron, and that black band in the back is a lot like an exposed bra. And it's patterned like a brick wall, which is weird. I do love her earrings though.
-I like Robin Roberts' sparkly dress:

Not enough people are wearing head to toe sequins on this carpet.
-Just as I say that, Lady Gaga shows up wearing a silvery sparkly dress and big-ass red gloves, but I couldn't see the front. :( Oh, there's the front. It's pretty, but the sleeves are weird (of course they are, look who we're talking about here) though I really like her hair and hair accessory. On anyone else I would hate those gloves, but because it's Lady Gaga, she's got to have something out of the ordinary, and I'm just glad thay're not like, made of meat or muppets:

Let me scour the internet for a picture of her hair from the back. Alas, I can't quite find one, but here's a side shot that at least shows more of it:

She's so pretty.
-Patricia Arquette's hair is a hot mess (or maybe just a mess) and her dress is unremarkable:

She looks so frazzled, like a new mom who's not sleep in a week. She's not though, is she?
-ARE WE READY FOR THIS? OMG SO MANY SPARKLES ON THE STAGE.

-So many people are here that they didn't show on the red carpet.
-Woah, NPH opens with a race joke. At least we're not going to pretend like it's not a thing. ("Honoring the best and whitest, er, brightest.")
-Clint Eastwood has no idea who Kanye West is, I'm pretty sure.
-This is the best opening to the Oscars I've seen in a long time. I love Jack Black. And NPH. And Into the Woods. I love this whole thing.
-Jennifer Hudson looks amazing:

Her face during the opening song was also priceless.
-Best Supporting Actor: (presented by Lupita, walking out with her amazing arm muscles, like she owns the stage. WORK GURL) - J.K Simmons, Whiplash.
-NPH is totally going to do a magic trick with those predictions, isn't he?
-God I love Liam Neeson's natural accent. Why doesn't he ever get to use it in movies?
-Geeze, how many 50 Shades jokes are we going to have to endure tonight? Don't answer that.
-Does Jennifer Lopez ever not look fantastic? Answer: no. Which is appropriate, since she's presenting the costume design award:

Her boobs don't look as good as they did at the Golden Globes, however. (I don't like her face in this pic, so just ignore that.) The dress is still nice.
-Best Costume Deisgn: Milena Canonero, The Grand Budapest Hotel. Milena is wearing very shiny pants and I approve:

She could stand to lose the raincoat, however.
-I am loving all of NPH's jokes, even the terrible 'with her spoon' pun he just made. He's really on point.
-Aww, they played Ring of Fire as Reese entered. <3 I also like her hair better here. It looks like she plumped it up a bit.
-Best Makeup and Hairstyling: The Grant Budapest Hotel. I love the way they showed the nominees for this, by showing a morph (like on Face Off) of what the people looked like before and after the movie makeup. (Tilda Swinton was unrecognizable afterwards, so I see why GBH won.)
-Nicole Kidman's dress is pretty good:

I'm digging the sparkle, the rainbow shimmer, and the bright red belt. And I like her natural accent too.
-Best Foreign Language Film: Ida, from Poland. They tried to play him (the director?) off, and he just kept right on talking. Bless. This may be the only time he ever gets to make an Oscar speech, let him have his moment.
-Shirley McLaine looks old, but she sure is sparkly. Almost too sparkly:

I think she borrowed that outfit from Liza Minelli.
-Marion Cotillard's dress doesn't thrill me, but she's very pretty:

-LEGOS. Lonely Island is wearing my dad's wedding tux. No, really:

Batman (who I'm pretty sure was really Will Arnett) has a Lego logo on his chest:

and they handed out Lego Oscars:

I love it. That was a great performance.
-Best Live Action Short Film: The Phone Call
-Best Short Documenrary: Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1 (It's a good year for phones?)
-Damn, what is on that woman's dress? (ETA: She's Dana Perry, the producer of Crisis Hotline)

As NPH said, "It takes a lot of balls to wear a dress like that."
-Wow, Maureen O'Hara is still alive? Good for her!
-"Oh sure, now you like him." NPH, about David Oyelowo, the actor who played MLK in Selma, but didn't get nominated for any Oscars. NPH is really not letting the race thing go.
-I don't love Viola Davis' dress, but her hair, makeup, and necklace are banging:

I mean, there isn't anything really wrong with it, it just makes me go, 'meh'.
-I like everything Gwyneth Paltrow has going on except that shoulder flower. WTF is that?

In the cold light of day, I actually like this a lot more than I did last night. Giant flower included. Possibly this wouldn't look great on just anyone, but Gwyneth is puling it off.
-I think I'd like Julianne Moore's dress without the band near her hips. It hits her funny. I mean, it's not my favorite, but it's ok:

Actually, in this shot I think the hip band is ok, and she should have lost the ones on the bottom. In any case, it has one detail line too many. Three's a crown, Julianne!
-Holy shit, NPH really went out onstage in his underpants. He is committed:

And in fantastic shape.
-I don't like Sienna Miller's dress:

There, I said it. It would be a lot better without those bows. And I never like those see-through skirts.
-Best Sound Mixing: Whiplash
-Best Sound Editing: American Sniper
-Jared Leto needs to shave, seriously:

-Best Supporting Actress: (where, Jared informs us, the nominees are four women, and in accordance with California state law, Meryl Streep) Patricia Arquette.
-I think I'm developing a crush on Rita Ora, and that amazing dress is helping. There's also something about her hair that I really dig:

You're getting two shots of this dress, because I heard Black Widow on the radio this morning, and because I love how the second one makes it look like she's an angel of light.
-Chloe Moretz's dress is not great, but it looks like it has pockets:

It also looks a bit like it was made out of someone's satin curtains, but she's so cute I can almost let that go. I hate the color, but I love her hair. I have mixed feelings, is what I'm saying.
-Best Visual Effects (I've seen two of the movies in this category!): Interstellar (that's not one of them!)
-I like Anna Kendrick's dress, haters be damned (the people on E! didn't like it):

I like the color, I like the cutout, I like the bling. And I like her hair. Also, how graceful and classy is this:

Amazingly so, that's how.
-Best Animated Short Film: Feast (I actually saw this one! And it made me cry!) This short aired before Big Hero 6, so this is an Oscar for Disney. :D
-Seriously, how did the E! people not love Zoe's dress? It's phenominal.
-Best Animated Feature Film: BIG HERO 6!!! YAY! I saw that one! And it was so good. I lost count of how many times it made me cry. Two Oscars for Disney!
-Best Production Design: The Grand Budapest Hotel
-Jessica Chastain continues to be lovely, but the top of her dress is weird and looks like two different dresses smooshed together:

I want to cut that droopy part off, or hike it up about six inches. The color is great on her though.
-Best Cinematography: Birdman or Some Long Title Everyone Keeps Having to Say
-I kind of love how Meryl Streep wears such casual things to the Oscars:

It's like, she's been here, she's done this, she's going to be comfortable, damn it! I bet she pulled this outfit out of her closet and did her hair herself. And she looks fab and refined, but in a cozy, casual way. She also sounds genuinely sad about the In Memorium montage.
P.S. How much fun is Meryl:

I want to be her friend.
-I will never be able to hate American Idol, because it gave us the gift that is Jennifer Hudson. She is just so pretty and talented and rocking that purple lipstick:

-Best Film Editing: Whiplash
-Not sure if Terrance Howard is moved, or drunk and confused.
-Jennifer Aniston is still so amazing looking and it kills me. I want to dislike the color of that dress, but I can't because it fits her so well and it's so sparkly:

The Fug Girls didn't like it, but I still do.
-Best Documentary Feature: Citizen Four (which is apparently about Edward Snowden). What the hell is that woman wearing on her arms? And is that girl behind her wearing a tutu?

-I kind of love Sophie Hunter's (Benedict Cumberbatch's wife's) earrings:

-Idina Menzel is here, and they're mocking John Travolta mercilessly. He's part of it, and this is awesome. Idina's hair and makeup are flawless and stunning, and I love the top of her dress:

...but the bottom bears a strong resemblance to a trash bag. It looked even worse on TV.
-Best Song: Glory, from Selma. Given how everyone was crying during the performance of it just now, this seems appropriate.
-Scar Jo definitely has the best of the big necklaces:

And she is rocking that hairstyle. Not sure what's up with the asymmetrical earrings though.
-And Lady Gaga is here to sing the tribute to The Sound of Music, I was skeptical, but wow, she sounds really, REALLY good. And more than a little like Julie Andrews. Shit Gaga, I was going to say something snarky, as much as I love you, but I take it back. Keep killing it! I don't know who decided Lady Gaga was the one to sing that medley, but they were fucking right.
-Somehow, I just knew they wouldn't do this without Julie Andrews. Another excellent decision. And she looks good!

P.S. I have no strong feelings on Lady Gaga's performance dress.
-Best Original Score: Alexandre Desplat, The Grand Budapest Hotel. Andrew approved of this.
-Best Original Screenplay: Birdman
-Best Adapted Screenplay: The Imitation Game
-I can't see Kiera Knightley's dress well enough to judge it, but I love whatever she's wearing on her head.

Yeah, this isn't great. It's better than her Globes dress (which isn't saying much) but it's so beige and I hate the writing on it. I still love her hair though.

I want that headband.
-Best Director: Alejandro Inarritu, Birdman (He's claiming to be wearing Michael Keaton's underpants. I'm not sure how to feel about that.)
-Her Cateness still looks phenominal, BTW.
-Best Actor: Eddie Redmayne! I was literally just saying to Andrew that he deserved to win (though take my opinion lightly, as I have seen NONE of these movies) because it's hard to do a full-body transformation into a still living man like he did.
-Me (to Matthew McConaughey): What is on your face? Andrew: Pubes.

-Best Actress: Julianne Moore
-OMG NPH, it's midnight, hurry this along! This show was supposed to end at 11:30. Yes, your magic trick was cute. It would have been cuter about an hour ago.
-Best Fucking Picture (Finally): Birdman. Michael Keaton sounds like Beetlejuice, the director is thanking all Mexicans everywhere, and I'm going to bed. Goodnight everybody!
ETA: I wrote this last night, but I'm not posting it until today because 1. I wanted to add pictures and 2. It badly needed editing, but the Oscars went SO LONG last night that I went to bed instead of doing that. So, here we are.
