So my family and I went to the Red Sox/Devil Rays game today for Vermont Day and because it was my parents' anniversary.
Now, anyone who either watched the game or is a Red Sox fan will understand what I am about to say.
They won, but just barely. They tried very hard to lose. To TAMPA BAY of all people. Tampa Bay SUCKS.
Wakefield pitched. Eight perfect, scoreless innings. Going into the 9th inning, it's 5-0 Red Sox. The new pitcher, S-something, gets two outs. The ENTIRE CROWD is on its feet, cheering and clapping for the last out and first Red Sox shut out.
And he walks the batter.
That's not so bad, man on first, we can deal with that.
Then he walks the next batter. And the next one. And the next one. Now he's walked home a run.
At this point, Terry Francona finally gets his head out of his ass and puts in a new pitcher, Tavores or something like that. He technically strikes a guy out, but Mirabelli drops the third strike and the guy gets to first and it's now 2-5 Red Sox and the bases are loaded it's not looking good.
And T-whatever, walks home another run.
The crowd starts to get ugly now. It's the ninth inning, it's boiling hot, we're all on our feet, we don't know who these pitchers are, we were winning by a lot and now, not so much, we only need one more out, and Francona keeps this asshole in.
The crowd gets even uglier, and starts chanting "We want Paplebon." (I sat down at this point, because I couldn't bear to watch anymore.)
The Tampa Bay batter finally hit a pitch, and even though he got on and another run scored, the Red Sox somehow managed to make an out and win 5-4.
Let's recap: Ninth inning, Tampa Bay has no runs and 2 outs. Red Sox lead 5-0. End of the game, Red Sox win 5-4. What's wrong with this picture?
Ah, but they wouldn't be the Red Sox if they DIDN'T play like that. Idiots.
Trot did well though. Even got the first Red Sox hit of the game. YAY TROT!
Final thought: There's nothing like watching a baseball game live. It's just way more engaging than when it's on tv. The energy, the cheering, the food, the wave, the sweat, the sound a bat makes when it hits a ball, the way the crowd oohs and ahhhs, the wafting smell of hot dogs and peanuts... It's something everyone should experience.
