Things I've learned from/because of the Olympics, Part 3:

-There's more than one kind of snowboard. Like, they use different ones for the halfpipe, the slopestyle, and the downhill race thing. Who knew?

-Curling originated in Scotland (thanks to Caroline on Facebook for filling me in, and then they showed a History of Curling thing on TV like, three hours later.) The Scots were probably drunk at the time, but I have no proof of this.

-Yuzuru Hanyu won his gold medal in an outfit designed by Johnny Weir. :D

Answer to last Sunday's song: Online Songs, by Blink-182. No one guessed this.

Things I've learned from the Olympics, part two.

-There is a move in pairs figure skating called the death spiral. Now that we know this, Andrew and I have taken to shouting, "Show us your death spiral!" at the TV at least once per pairs skate.

-Sage Kotsenburg looks like a Hemsworth, talks like a surfer in a 90's movie, and is surely getting the most action in the Olympic Village because he also has a fun personality and a gold medal.

-There's a trick in snowboarding called a Japan. No idea what it is, but I learned of its existence. I also know that 'tweak', 'cork', and 'mute grab' are snowboarding terms. Maybe at some point I will learn what they all mean.

-When you start to go out of control/crash during the luge, you're not supposed to bail off the sled. This has not been my experience with real world sledding, and I suspect that sometimes you don't exactly have a choice.

-The USA is totally trolling Russia by sending Johnny Weir to commentate on figure skating. Just looking at him is gay propaganda, because everyone wants to be as fabulous and awesome as he is. Please enjoy these pictures and tweets that illustrate (literally) this point. His Heidi braid is my favorite.

-The top of the ski jump track (374') is higher than the Statue of Liberty (305') or Big Ben (316'). And the horizontal distance they jump is around 115 yards.

Something I learned because of the Olympics: The Dutch wear orange because it's their national color, even though it's not on their flag. It's their national color because William of Orange led the Netherlands to independence from Spain, and the Dutch royal family are his descendants, the House of Orange. (Also, the Dutch king and queen were at the speed skating race, wearing t-shirts and pants and cheering on their skater like normal people.)

Answer to last Monday's song: Our Lips Are Sealed, by The Go-Go's. No one guessed this.

Things I've learned from the Olympics so far:

-Only three African nations sent competitors to the 2014 winter Olympics.

-Nepal has the only non-rectangular flag in the world.

-The single athlete Nepal sent to this Olympics is honest-to-God named Sherpa. His name is Dachhiri Sherpa, and he seems pretty damn awesome.

And I have like, two more weeks to learn other things!

Answer to last Saturday's song: All I Care About is Love, from Chicago. [livejournal.com profile] becofoz got this one right!
You wanna know the sadosity of my life right now? I have no work to do, and consequently I don't know what to do with myself.

I had planned on working on my lab report, but I decided to just say "fuck it" and e-mailed it to my peer reviewers. I have three weeks (counting all of break) before the final draft is due, so I figured I could take a night off.

Then I was going to do my Schools and Society homework, but there isn't any. Nothing to read and no journal for tomorrow. WTF?

My Chem is completely done, as is my Psych, and for Philosophy we have to read only one chapter from Brave New World. Not only do I not want to read that now, because I won't remember it by the time I have that class again, but I've already read it (junior year, for Mr. Hooker).

I played Zoo Tycoon for like 2 hours, and now my arm hurts. And I am SOOOOOOOOOO BORED.

I think I'm going to go play cribbage with Nora. Which is fun, but still shows how sad my life is. Oy.

P.S. Bart and I are tentatively planning a bowling outing on Friday. Any takers?
I would like to mention that I successfully registered for all the classes that I want for next year, which are Population Ecology, Gen Chem, Psych, and Philosophy (which I don't WANT to take, but have to if I want to graduate, which I do.)

And I just got the e-mail saying that I can take the education class I want, so that means I can explore if I want to double major in Biology and Education and then become a Bio teacher... I think I'd be an ok teacher... right?

Also, the play I'm stage managing is the funniest thing ever. I've seen all the scenes like 50 times, and they never get old. If there's any way you can get up here April 23 or 24 COME SEE IT!!! Cause it's amazing.

Easter vacation starts after classes tomorrow! Yay!
