amyofaquitaine said it was good (and she has excellent taste) and now I'm hooked. I've only seen the first three episodes, because of course it premiered during my big move/apartment hunt/new job, so I couldn't watch it, but then AMC showed all the episodes on Memorial Day and we DVR-ed them so I can catch up.
So far, I think Ben is the prettiest, I kind of ship him with Caleb, and I LOVE Caleb. OMG, he's just so amusing and unapologetic and brave and honorable and he sang Spanish Ladies and I want to squish him. I also went on Wikipedia and looked up all the main characters to see if they were going to survive this mess (especially my precious Caleb) or not, because that's just how I roll. I don't know any show spoilers though (let's please keep it that way, too) and since they're already playing a little loose with the facts, who knows what will happen?
My biggest question so far, however, is what the hell is so special about Anna that everyone on this show wants to bang her? Abe, Simcoe, Selah (the only one who should be doing so) and even kind of Caleb. She's pretty, I guess, and brave to be running a tavern alone and spying and stuff, and she sure doesn't put up with Caleb's crap, but I'm just not on the Anna wagon. I feel like the show is pushing her hard as the strong female lead, but hasn't really let her do anything remarkable. I am presently team Mary, because I feel very bad for her and I just KNOW she's going to get a shit deal. That's the only way this can possibly play out. I have probably said, "poor Mary" about a dozen times in three episodes.
On the other hand, these two are clearly in love. <3

"Spanish Ladies", the theme song and 4 or 5 others...period songs sung by current pop/folk artists, obviously. If you're interested, I can put the tracks up for download this weekend.

Date: 2014-06-12 04:10 pm (UTC)It's going to take me a while to finish the season, because I keep being busy wedding planing at night, and I can only handle one or two episodes at a time (mostly because I get annoyed trying to understand their accents. I don't know what it is about me that I can't understand ANYTHING anyone is saying and have to constantly keep rewinding to follow the dialogue. I had the same problem with Will on OuaTiW. It's not them, it's me.)

Date: 2014-06-12 04:32 pm (UTC)I just finished the book that the show is (VERY VERY VERY) loosely based last week (Washington's Spies by Alexander Rose). SO FREAKING GOOD, even if it does make me pick out all the historical inaccuracies on the show. The best thing is that real!Caleb seemed to be as awesome as show!Caleb and he seems to be the one least changed from book to screen. (I will forever be disappointed that the show didn't keep real!Ben's "disconcerting habit" of "tilting his head like a quizzical beagle" whenever someone spoke to him.)
THE DRAGOON HAT! That is an amazing hat. I'm also quite bummed when Abe's Revolutionary Beanie of Freedom doesn't make an appearance in an episode.
YES THAT GUY LOOKS JUST LIKE HIDDLESTON. It's extra-funny in a way because the actor who plays John Andre played one of Captain America's Howling Commandoes in the first Captain America movie, so you can play 7-degrees or whatever between him & Hiddleston lol. Also, I want to know if Andre's blond little rat-tail braid is ~historically accurate or if hair & make-up just wanted to play around.

Date: 2014-06-12 05:50 pm (UTC)I love that Abe's Revolutionary Beanie of Freedom is actually historically accurate (cause I thought sure the costumer just stopped at LL Bean on the way to the set), it's called a Monmouth cap and there are actually ones that have survived from that time period. It just made me ridiculously happy. /nerd
LOL I never thought of a Padawan! I have so many questions about that braid (character-wise, not actor-wise since it's obviously fake); it's longer than Andre's regular ponytail, so are we supposed to think he specifically grew it out longer than the rest of his hair and dyed it blond, or is it a clip-on and did they even have clip-on ~extensions back then??? (And how did we as a country go from dudes wearing ponytails/longer hair to thinking anything longer than a buzzcut was "hippie hair", like when the Beatles came over in the 1960s and everyone flipped their shit? I wonder if you can buy a book on historical hair…? I WONDER ABOUT STUPID STUFF, OKAY.)

I never know why things go in and out of fashion, but I'll bet good money there's a book about it somewhere. When I worked in the reference section of the library I learned that if it exists, someone has written an encyclopedia or dictionary about it.
